Dallas - #2 Least Safe Place in USA from Natural DisastersArticle in Forbes Magazine (click - view our rankings)...

Not a very good list.... it credits Dallas with 11 hurricanes!?!? Sure, we might get some rain from them, but I really don't count those as disasters here.
Then again, they could be counting humiliating losses to Tulsa U.
"And, according to scientists, increased global warming will only lead to more hurricanes per year, resulting in greater loss of life and property. Dallas has lots of wind and hail and is prone to some tornadoes. (In fact, Texas has the highest homeowners insurance rates in the U.S.)" We've had earthquakes, too? It says 3. ![]()
I think Dallas is more in tornado alley than hurricanes. They have to travel almost 500 miles over land and even the worst kind peters out to a category one over that much land. The Trinity River basin is pretty wide for a normally small trickle and flooding damage should be minimal. Its on a pretty stable shelf and earthquakes are relatively minor in power. Natural disasters are cyclical in nature and there has been no proven correlation with global warming (if there really is global warming) or ozone layer depletion. El Nino and El Nina currents are more involved with that phenomenon as well as the drift of the gulf stream.

Its on a pretty stable shelf and earthquakes are relatively minor in power. A major fault line in the middle of the US is located several hundred miles north of us (Dallas) around the Memphis area. The New Madrid fault line is named for the town it is located near, in either Tennessee or Kentucky, I can’t remember which. In the early 1800's this area experienced a major earthquake that caused the Mississippi River to run backwards. The river filled up a valley inhabited by the Reelfoot Indians, killing a great majority of them. There is a lake there now in Kentucky called Reelfoot Lake. The earthquake was so strong it caused bells to ring in Boston. Dallas is in the zone to be affected by another earthquake from this fault line. Should another earthquake of the same magnitude occur today, cities like Memphis, Little Rock and Dallas would most likely be devastated. We have not really built our buildings to be earthquake resistant. Just thought these were interesting facts you might find interesting. I’m Jim Cantore, and this is the Weather Channel. PS. This does not mean Armageddon is near, unless we lose to Baylor.
Being an engineer, I have a lot of respect for science, but to the best of my knowledge, the earth has been warming up since the last ice age. Back in the 50's, the scientific community was certain that we were headed for a new ice age. We do not have sufficient documentation over a long enough period of time to accurately predict the cycles of meterological changes in the earth's atmosphere which can be as long as an eon and the computer programs being generated to make those predictions are trying to cover all the variables without really knowing all the variables. Alas, a computer program is only as smart as the people who develop it. That is my humble opinion on that subjest.
Speaking of Armageddon. How long before TV preachers declare that this was God's judgment on that "Sin City" known as New Orleans? And we all know that they have [pause] casinos in Biloxi. I figure Pat Robertson will make the call tomorrow while asking for donations to aid the victims.
They could do like Galveston did after the 1900 hurricane and actually RAISE the city above sea level and build a seawall to prevent another storm surge. And with the technology now available, it could be done THOUSANDS of times better than it was in 1900.
There are new studies that are showing in part that the reason we have not seen the development of a new ice age is indeed becaue of man, although not necessarily due to the indutrial revolution through current output of greenhouse gases. What they are finding, in particular by looking at ice cores is that about the time that man began to develop agriculture and started to terreform the land there was also a marked increase in the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere that is unprecedented in the climatological record. What they are postulating is that the cooling trend the earth was supposed to be starting was instead counterbalanced by the heat trapped by the increased CO2 emmisions caused by humans. Meaning that we already have averted an ice age just because we got smart and decided to sit in one place and farm, and grow in population and consequently farm some more. Obviously, this would mean that if we are now increasing the levels of greenhouse gases and trapping more heat then we are making the situation considerably worse. There was a really interesting article in Scientific American about this, I believe it was January of this year.
Additionally when it comes to global warming, if the mainstream media reported it as a science story and instead of a political story you would see about 95% of the stories confirming global warming which corresponds to the same percentage of scientists who agree that yes in fact global warming does exist. Unfortunately, the issue has been politiized by the same companies and lobbying groups that are raping your wallet everytime you go to the gas pump. Consequently, we don't get the real story any more. The donkey's name is Kiki.

Not exactly TV preachers but this was sent to me a few days ago. http://www.repentamerica.com/pr_hurricanekatrina.html
we are entering into the period of the scientific dark ages with the Bush Administration in a way never seen before since the days of Adam and Eve which Intelligent Design experts assure me occurred 10,000 years ago on Monday at 6:30 pm EST. Scientist are shaking their heads in absolute disbelief with this crap. No one said science has all the answers but at least they know what the issues are.
ok boys. global warming is here because the media says so - due to "unbiased research" over the last 100 years proving it. and guess what? us bad unenlightened homo sapiens, ie., the mean old capitalists and conservatives are to blame. hell, we only care about enriching ourselves, right? so, let's all quit driving, stop eating animal or fish protein, stop starting fires to warm ourselves, destroy civilization as we know it, start respecting trees and plant life, and basically start wandering the earth again. i think we should let the evironmentalists and peta lovers go first.
Firar, your post shows your ignorance of the situation. The overwhelming majority of the scientific community agress that global warming is a problem. The only people who don't are those who have minimal experience or knowledge in the area. Also, the overwhelming majority of the scientific community isn't calling for a return to hunting and gathering (which would include eating animal protein) they are simply calling for the development of cleaner technologies and the retrofitting of the older technologies so that we can continue to have the standard of living we enjoy today for our future generations. Future generations that will be needed so that those "greedy capitalists" as you call them can continue to post profits in future generations. Those calling for a vegan culture are extremists, just like Al Queda, and those bombing abortion clinics and calling for assassinations of foreign political leaders.
