1310 the Ticket, Recruiting Correlations to success..

Postby PonyKris89 » Fri Feb 07, 2014 7:05 pm

I only caught the tail end of the HardLine(Feb 6 show) talking about a report(from where I don't know) that showed that
football recruiting classes ranked top 25 on average over the past 4 years, that only 12 were actually ranked top 25 in Final BCS this season.

...also pointed out a high number of 5 stars that never panned out.

Corby was relaying the article to the listeners, so reliability could be iffy.

Did anyone here the discussion?

That is probably due more to coaching than the quality of athlete they got. Also good conferences have teams that beat up on each other and the talent level is so close that it is hard to stay in the top 25.

So half of the schools with top 25 classes over the last 4 years were ranked in the top 25 this year. 50%.

That leaves 12 or 13 spots in the top 25 for the 75+ teams that did not have top 25 classes on average in the last 4 years. 17%

Was he referencing the article to support or validate the accuracy of recruiting rankings?

I believe the overall tenor of the segment was that Recruiting Service accuracy are not what they are cracked up to be.

Right now 7 of the Top 10 Recruiting Classes are from the SEC-
10 of the Top 20 classes are from the SEC
How the hell can all of them be ranked in the Top 25
Recruiting Classes don't directly correlate to Top 25 because they play in varying conferences with different degrees of schedule strength.
Hawaii was Top 25
Could TCU, Haawaii, and Boise compete with the SEC each week
How about the annual appearance of Ball St, Northern Illinois?
Could even a program like UCF compete week to week
They almost got upset by midgets 4 times this year
I'll repeat one of my oldest and most cherished points

Another way to look at it is 50% of the top 25 recruiting classes had top 25 rankings, but only ~12% of teams outside the top 25 in recruiting made it into the top 25 rankings. I'll take my chances with 4 and 5 star players.

Great point. Sounds familiar, where have I heard this before?

Great points. That's why I don't care how we do against Rutgers or temple in football. I care about how we do against tech, tcu etc. programs that we want to be on an even level with. I don't care 1 bit if we go 10-1 against garbage competition. I'd rather be competitive against teams that matter.

but you see it is a sequence. we aren't going to get even 50% until we beat all the trash teams - and right now we don't do that so you know what the outcome will be vs Big 12 teams.

we have to walk before we run. until we start getting two thirds 3 stars instead of 7/8 2 stars - we know what the outcome will be before we play the game.

The strategy should be to recruit so we can dominate our conference. Texas talent is the best and should help us win the AAC year in and year out. Being conference champions will definitely boost our football brand and help us attract better recruits so we can then compete and beat Big 12 teams later on.

We will have to win the AAC a couple of years, then start showing up and crashing BCS bowls (Cotton, Fiesta or Chick fil a Bowls) which should put us in position to compete for the same kids that lower and mid tier Big 12 such as Kansas, Iowa State, TCU and Texas Tech go for.

Maybe. It's not like Georgia has the last 2 of 3 years. And they went 7-1 or 8-0 in SEC

Texas has had a better record than June Jones almost every year of June Jones entire career playing in probably the 2nd best conference in the Country while June coached in the WAC, CUSA and the AAC. The Theory of Relativity
