Basketball recruiting question

Postby mrydel » Sat Feb 15, 2014 10:02 am

Larry Brown is relentless in his BB recruiting. But something I do not understand. We have seen numerous, even beyond numerous, offers going out to good and above good players. Some are obviously the cream of the crop players and we are in play with many of them. So what happens if 5 or 6 or 7 of the lower level (relatively speaking) players decide to commit for 2015. We obviously need to keep room for the top ones that are still considering us but I would think that if you offer a kid and he commits then he takes up a spot. Do you tell them, "ok, you are committed but if a better one comes along you are out?"

My question is just one about how the commits are made, conditions on the commitments, etc. I know we and Brown all want the best of the best as opposed to the worst of the best.

Hopefully my question is understood for those in the know.

this is a good question. i would like to hear from some of you who may know: how is the recruitment/commitment process managed? generally and by smu. i always have assumed that every offer is couched with the terms "if the class fills up", etc.

with basketball there are so few 'ships to be offered each year, how is this worked out? when the top recruit in the country finally decides, is there automatically a game of musical chairs that commences, with already committed players moving around?

i can't imagine a coach telling the nations number one recruit, "sorry, we are booked". or is it more likely that a guy already in school and at the end of the bench gets told to not come back.

some of you must know how this has transpired at other programs. please dish.

JMO. I think SMU is "all in" trying to get Myles Turner to commit to SMU. If Myles commits somewhere else, look for the staff to look for transfers from other programs (coaching changes, athletes that are on line to graduate, and have one year of eligibility left). If SMU goes the transfer route, it bridges a gap between the current roster & a "monster" 2015 recruiting class with at least 5 scholarships available.

That is not my question LHS81. I am speaking primarily about the 2015 class. We have many, many offers out there. We could fill up today if 5-7 kids committed. How do we make sure we get the best of what we want? In football there seems to be a little more room for the "if you do not commit by next week we are moving on to another" mentality, but I am not sure about BB. It seems that Brown puts out at least one new offer daily. How do we make sure we have room for the special kids we are going after when we could fill up with good but lesser talent?

Very good question, mrydel, I've wondered the same. When looking at the 2015 class we currently have sixteen offers out to uncommitted recruits:

Elijah Thomas - 5-star C with medium interest
Charles Matthews - 5-star G with medium interest
King McClure - 5-star G with medium interest
Isaiah Broscoe - 5-star G with medium interest
Tyler Davis - 5-star C with medium interest
Jalen Brunson - 4-star G with medium interest
Austin Grandstaff - 4-star G with medium interest
Allonzo Trier - 4-star G with medium interest
DJ Hogg - 4-star F with medium interest
Matthew McQuaid - 4-star F with medium interest
Jawun Evans - 4-star G with medium interest
Jimmy Whitt - 4-star G with medium interest
Admin Gilder - 3-star G with medium interest
Chad Lott - 3-star G with medium interest
Jordan Murphy - 3-star F with medium interest
D'jery Baptiste - NR C with medium interest

If we have five ships available and five of these guys commit, then Matthews calls LB and says he wants to commit. I have no idea what happens but can't imagine where LB tells him sorry, we're full. It would be nice to know how that situation is handled.

I'm just wondering whether we have any 2015 recruits with medium interest.

It's too bad Larry Brown can't "coach 'em up" or we could have just offered some 2 star Wayland Baptist commits and have the whole class done by now.

Luckily LB has a utopia to offer recruits, for now.

He doesn't have "utopia" here yet but he was landing 5 stars (and other power conference caliber recruits) when the building was empty.

yeah 2 decades of no NCAA Tourney-What more could he have asked for-except Larry had a plan and a staff that outworks its competition in recruiting.

I agree. LB just goes after the best players and has built relationships with high school coaches by visiting them personally. Just like the USF football coach built relationships with his local high school head coaches by going to see them and got 25 players with BCS offers to go to USF in this year's signing class.

You guys use the term outwork in an interesting way. Do you really think our current staff is on the road anymore than our last staff?

Not sure if they are out coaching or out-talenting. Brown was out coached a ton last year.
