Two cents

Postby ThadFilms » Wed Sep 07, 2005 12:13 pm

Okay. Last night, it took me the better part of two and a half hours to read all the threads and all the posts that I missed on my almost three day hiatus from the funeral dirge that is the PonyFans.com world.

If you too have been away, here’s a recap. We suck. We’re all gonna’ die. I wish I went to Michigan (well, no one says actually says “Michigan”…). Put in Phillips. We suck. Why am I not dead yet? Hire Todd Dodge. Hire Flanigan. The season’s over. We’re doomed… oh, and lest I forget – fire everyone.

So…

As I walked away from Ford Stadium Saturday night, I felt that all was lost. That everything I had hoped for was over and done with and that “my whole world was black”… but then the dark cloud past and by the time I got back to the car, I decided that throwing away a lifetime of fandom, wasn’t worth one lousy game.

Thus, at the risk of being handed the dreaded sunshiner label, I am going to look to the positives of Saturday night’s game.

-We were one fluke play away from winning. Say we recover the last gasp onside kick and rumble, bumble, stumble it in all the down the field for a TD… sure, we’d still be harping on all the negatives now, but we’d be doing it while basking in the glow of a win. A game that is a one-possession loss is still a loss… but it’s not a death knell. Even an undefeated season wouldn’t get us into the National Championship game…
-Massey looked good. He needs to be fed the ball. Period.
-Our defense was very, very good… for three quarters.
-We looked to be improved at every position… save for quarterback.

So, I’ll go back to what I said after the game… put in Phillips… you folks remember how it was noted on this board that Bennett made a watch word for this season? And that word was “It”? Well Phillips has IT. Just put him out there for every play for the rest of the season.

Let’s just beat the crap out of TCU, and all will be right with the world.

First off, It was nice to meet you Thad.

I see the game with some positives too. One play away... maybe not but if we don't go for 4th and ?? at the end of first half and don't fumble twice - we WIN the game.

Secondly, we are not where we need to be with the QB. I still think that a more frequent substitution fequency would have helped.

We are not as bad as we think and TCU is not as good as they think.

I do not think that we will lose by 16.

We'll probably lose by at least 30.. and I would much rather stick to the "we suck, is this over yet.. when's basketball start" mentality.

We can't fix football, we've proven that over the last 16 years.

it can be fixed, we just need a new athletic director and pony up some money for a name coach- Remember TCU was 1-10 in 1997 when their only win was against SMU

the majority of SMU alumni could care less about basketball, Football is and always will be king in Texas

Much easier to turn around a bball program than a football.

We've already been thru two AD's and 4 football coaches since 1989, and it still hasn't been fixed, and SMU football is not even king of the metroplex, falling way behind both TCU and UNT. I think when the basketball team starts to turn the corner, it'll bring the majority of SMU alumni who care about SMU athletics with it.

true, but that's not the point- the vast majority of alumni care much more about football than basketball

there is no league for a basketball only school in this part of the country. You gonna play as an independent? Sun Belt? Mothball Ford? Forget it. I'm a hoops guy, but its not feasible. Just compete in football and win 5-7 games per year. Its not that hard and it can be done. Why it isnt happening, I dont know and no one should accept it as okay.

the hiring of Copeland was the downfall of SMU athletics- Rossley was turning the ship in 1996 with a 5-6 record against tougher competition than Cavan or Bennett has faced, Cavan won with Rossleys players in 1997 and it has been all downhill since then

Compare Rossley's staff- 5 are in the NFL, 1 is WR coach @ Miami, 1 is the Def Cord. @Georgia Tech

It was great to meet you too, BUS...

I guess I'm looking forward to the TCU game... well I'm looking forward to it much more than I was two minutes after the Baylor game ended.

Honestly, I'm not for yanking these to guys just yet... but truth be told, the only chance we have pulling a fluke play win at A&M is to have the ball in the hands of one Chris Phillips. So from the standpoint of, let's see what EckMo can give us, well, I'd say a couple more games... but with Aggieville looming, I say we get Phillips in there in the TCU game to shake off the rust and an engineer the game winning drive.

Not that it'll happen, but it's just my two cents of sunshine.
