Get real. The people who "saved" SMU athletics are the big money donors who were finally tired of trying to play D1A football with Draconian admissions policies and paying a head coach $400K. We made the financial and institutional commitment to be competitive in football. Yes hiring Jones was a part of that, but with the most supportive administration and admissions policies SMU has had since the 80's he's flatlined to mediocrity. Lets see what another coach can do under these conditions.

The money was a necessary but not sufficient condition. Recruiting changes, most of which were accomplished during previous coaching administrations, were necessary but not sufficient.

You want to make the argument that other coaches could have come in here in 2008 and, seeing where we were at that time, done as much or better than four bowl games in a row from 2009 through 2012? Is that your argument? I am deeply skeptical of the truth of that seeing how June is known as a turnaround guy.

the recruiting admission changes since the day Phil Bennett was fired and from Day 1 in June Jones tenure were fine-they are no longer an impediment to building a strong, competitive program. Its a ridiculous excuse now-got it-there is no foundation to such an argument or any evidence in 6 years otherwise. See Larry Brown

How many programs did he turn around before he got to SMU other than Hawaii? You act like he turned around 3 or 4 programs before he got to SMU.

Any good coach may have done just as good or better with the recruiting restrictions lifted like they were imo.

That's what I was about to ask.

It's even a little questionable if he "turned them around". Hawaii played in a very weak conference and they had one "magical" year. I think he's living off an unwarranted reputation. Reason no one else except wife beaten SMU will take him.

JJ took a hapless Hawaii team very similar to ours in many ways and posted three nine-win and one ten-win, one eleven-win, and one twelve-win seasons. Of course anyone could have done that as well. Says the thankless revisionist historian who wants someone to hang.

Not a suckup at all. I sure don't agree with the way JJ does everything. But Stallion started this thread to point out that one of our players got some positive pub, and it turned into an argument about JJ … again. That's more witch hunt than suckup.

Of course, there's also this:
