Copeland- SMU downfall

Postby huntnfish » Wed Sep 07, 2005 2:31 pm

The hiring of Copeland was the downfall of SMU athletics- Rossley was turning the ship in 1996 with a 5-6 record against tougher competition, tougher recruiting restrictions and horrible facilities than Cavan or Bennett has faced, Cavan won with Rossleys players in 1997 and it has been all downhill since then.

Compare Rossley's staff- 5 are in the NFL, 1 is WR coach @ Miami, 1 is the Def Cord. @Georgia Tech

I am sure Stallion will bring up Rossley's record and dog him, but Rossley coached all but one year in the SWC against tough competition without having the recruiting standards eased (not so much under Cavan) and without the great facilities that Cavan and Bennett had. I am not saying Rossley was the greatest coach of all time but we were headed in the right direction at least. In addition, the 5-6 and 6-5 seasons in 1996 and 1997 season were against much tougher competition, even in the WAC. And, we did go 5-6 in the SWC in 1992.

3-24-2 in his last 29 games while SMU was in the SWC. Never beat Rice in 6 tries. A monumental failure.

there you go quoting exactly what I knew you would- but then look at what what Rossley and his recruits did against the competition which is comparable- but you won't do that

too bad you did not adress my other points

but we can still agree on Copeland needing to go

That's very similar, and actually better than Bennett's record only the
SWC was MUCH tougher competition. This is the year Bennett needs to
show us something besides questionable calls on 4th down at midfield
with < a minute in the half.

Cavan was 5-8 against former SWC schools.

Attorneys love statistics don't they  The set of SWC schools we
played during Cavans era was reduced to TCU, and Rice.

well he sure wasn't 0-6 against Rice either-which is basically why he got fired. The 35-17 loss in 1996 making SMU 2-5 on a 5 game losing streak was the end of the ballgame. You only get 6 chances at SMU to beat Rice-then you gotta go.

We should only give Bennett 5 chances. Rice beats us this year then
Bennett is a has Bennett.

Just hope he doesn't say it's "not a must win game".

Stallion you love BS stats.

was 5-8 against Texas, aTm, Tech, Baylor? No

the fact is when Rossley left the football team was in better shape than now or when Cavan left, you can disagree whether Rossley was a good coach or not, but you can't disagree with that
