Top 10: Rice

Postby Letterman » Wed Oct 23, 2002 4:17 pm

Top 10 reasons SMU will beat Rice Saturday afternoon:

10. Rice attendance will make Mustangs feel like the home team
9. Owls' defense felt ready for run-based SMU offense after practicing against run-based Rice offense. Bartel throws for 320 yards and three more touchdowns
8. Rice defensive end Brandon Green makes Judson Davis look like Forrest Gregg
7. Projected rainy weather slows Rice option attack; Keylon Kincade again runs wild, scoring twice and cracking 1,000-yard plateau
6. Rice head coach Ken Hatfield confuses players by referring to Mustangs as "McCoys"
5. Houston-area Mustangs (Leroy Price, Ashton Nixon, Chris Godfrey, Earl Morris, Brian Bischoff, Trent Hrncir and Brad Kieschnick) have the games of their lives in front of friends and family.
4. Pre-game meal? Owl soufflé.
3. Ken Hatfield reminds anyone who will listen that he's fifth among Div. I-A coaches with 157 career wins; doesn't realize that beating Tulsa every year doesn't count and mistakenly thinks he's in the same class as the four D-I coaches (Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Lou Holtz and Jackie Sherrill) with more victories.
2. Rice defensive coordinator takes one look at Richard Bartel and mutters "Damn, that Romo kid is getting taller. Hasn't he graduated yet?"

And the #1 reason SMU will beat Rice Saturday afternoon:

1. Rice's option offense loses precision when MOB (Marching Owl Band) takes over coaching at practice.

Great reasons except Houston players Price and Godfrey don't play the positions they should. They are wasted as part time special team players.

Based on what we've seen recently, I'd love to see Godfrey and Price -- maybe even Coach Bennett's son (except he's a 9th-grade defensive end/deep snapper) -- get some time at safety.

I don't know who this Letterman guy is, but these Top 10 lists you've thrown in the last two weeks are hysterical.

Owl soufflé?
Sounds disgusting.

Sorry guys, the list is something only alumni can truly cherish. Old farts Image Happy to see you all on the boulevard and in the stands! Keep supporting! What's the deal with us not selling beer at Ford Stadium? I know we're a dry campus, but my god, isn't alcohol at a football game a money maker? Sure would attract more fans, I'm sure. Aren't you people sick of having to get drunk on the boulevard BEFORE the game? Glad we have the boulevard though. The students that do attend the game are usually coerced into going by the beer they just drank. It's truly a challenge to get a sober student to a game. It'll take a few winning seasons before you see a resurgence of school spirit unfortunately. Oh, and btw, how'd ya'll like us rushing the field? Most were drunk, sure, but sure looked like school spirit, eh? Image

Storming the field was awesome ... I was one of them. All I think it would take to revive school spirit is for us to win out this season and win our 2 or 3 openers next season and you'll start seeing people at every game.
