Slowing down the Defense chant

Postby SMU 86 » Sun Mar 02, 2014 3:13 pm

I have noticed that when we start doing the traditional De-Fense chat that some speed it up faster and faster. It seems like it kind of makes the chant kind awkward. I hope we all get on the same page. I like the slower one pace defense myself.

Yes I'm hoping we can figure that out, keep it at a normal fluid pace and sustain it for the whole defensive possession.

I have no idea why that happens. We all complain about it too

We are neophytes when it comes to cheering.

Not to hijack the thread but thought you guys would like to know this. Rick Hart was sitting in front of us at the game, some of the guys were getting pretty rowdy cursing a lot at the UCF bench and the refs. Rick Hart stood up and said "hey guys I really appreciate you guys coming out for the game but please try to watch your language or I will have to escort you out of here there are women sitting in front of you guys"

It really took the wind out of our section for a while not gonna lie. A couple guys even started yelling "I disagree with you ref but very respectfully" and stupid stuff like that and rick hart just laughed it off and said yeah thats the way to cheer guys. I am firmly on the side of let college kids be college kids and say what they want during games this isn't highschool (maybe I'm just still immature). But Mr. Hart handled it very professionally and I respected that and it got us to stop.

Larry brown also will not let us ever start a Bull [deleted] chant he gets so mad when we do, and we all listen to him and stop

You can cheer loudly without foul language. Show you have a better vocabulary. Cheer loud, come up with innovative things to say, but just don't use the obviously foul language. Someday you may have children sitting there and you might not want them hearing that.

Now, that said, I would have felt the same as you when I was in school.

Yeah I'm sure one day that will really tick me off if some punk kid was yelling that kind of stuff in front of my wife and kids. But point was Rick Hart handled it very well and I was impressed by it.

There is definitely a line that shouldn't be crossed. Cursing is over the line at any level.

Squirrel sounds at the next game should be encouraged.

A buddy of mine said once that nobody ever looked smart or clever cussing at a sporting event. I think that is correct - but I am defiantly a believer in trying to get the other team off their game.

There are ways to absolutely dismantle the other team using your head a bit. Do a little homework before the game and have some fun with it. Most of these guys have twitters and facebook and lots of public information. Worst case just make it so they cant hear squat. Best moment in our building this year was when Memphis coach had to call in plays with flash cards. That was beautiful. Cussing is just dull - and it makes you look kind of low-rent.

I think a "Respectfully Disagree" chant would be good when a foul is called against us.

I have to agree, I don't cuss much in every day life anyways. That's generally not the case with most college kids though. I think cussing at a kid doesnt even phase them to be honest. But I think its going to happen no matter what. I think Hart handled it very well.

I like the "we respectfully disagree" chant...

The hyper-pace of the DE-FENSE chant is exhausting...

I agree. Maybe SFtoHilltop and a few others on the floor will read this and help get everyone on the same page.
