Eric Dickerson is right...put phillips in or leaveHate to admit it, but I agree a little with Eric Dickerson on his comment about SMU not having enough Black players only in the case of the QB's. I don't think Chris Phillips is the savior, but if we're going to get zero production from the QB position shouldn't we use someone who will be here next year? I mean Romo and Eckert sucked against Baylor and everyone else they've ever played against that had any talent. They can't handle the pressure. Doesn't everyone remember Chris at Ford against TCU? We had the horny lizards shaking about having to face him for 3 more years.
I have 2 main points: 1) THe QB situation should have been figured out in the last year we had before the season started. 2) The fact that Phillips isn't getting a chance makes coach look a little racist. (I do believe that maybe it has something to do with Phillip's work ethic, but we all saw the kid was a player...he should be on the field somewhere...he's a gamer for christ's sake)
You're and idiot. Phillips hasn't gotten the offense yet. How can you say that makes Bennett look like a Racist when he RECRUITED him in the first place?
And then to 'racistly' recruit - what, gasp...ANOTHER Black QB in Justin Wallis (who by the way will probably be the starter next year if he is as for real as he seems)? Quit your stupid unfounded assertions and you should edit your message to delete that comment.
I stated very clearly that their were probably other reasons for phillips not starting, but he hasn't played. I am not accusing phil as being racist. I'm just saying what it looks like. He needs to be telling us why phillips hasn't gotten a chance. I'm tired of seeing that community college trash go out there and lose football games. I want to see a guy that has played well in the past out there. If hes not out there, I want an explanation. Practice doesn't mean anything. Game performance is everything. Chris has more than one solid performance. The CC transfers have nothing.
So, at this point in American insanity, affirmative action should be used on the football field?
The notion that different colors need to be represented in any area for the sake of representing that color, is insanity. If there wasn't one black QB who could play the position, then there shouldn't be one black QB on any team - same for white etc. Best person plays, period. Dickerson is just another race baiting whiner at this point. Southern, Texan, American - in that order.
Phillips had a chance last year and stunk up the field. He had a chance in spring practice and from many reports, showed up out of shape. He had a chance this summer and apparently skipped voluntary work-outs. Any starting spot needs to be earned. You don't just hand those jobs out to those who feel "entitled". Otherwise, you have a rogue player who won't call the plays planned by the coaching staff, won't execute those plays properly, won't be in the proper physical condition thus injury prone, and rely solely on himself without including his teammates. That is a recipe for disaster. He may be riding pine for awhile so that he will realize that Bennett is the coach, he is one player on the team, and either he needs to earn his way into the game or the others who have done what is necessary to get the starting nod, need to play themselves out of a job. Bennett could have taken the easy route here and started him, but I suspect Bennett sees potential in this player and wants to get him to the point where he can be a great player instead of a good player with a bad attitude.
This thread is stupid. There is a reason Phillips isn't playing and it isn't because of race. If it were, we would have a real problem next year because all the potential starters at QB are african-americans.
The problem is..., well, I don't know what Eckert's freakin' problem was against Baylor, but he is the QB best suited for the offense that Burns wants to run. He is the most accurate passer, which is what Burns wants to do. Unfortunately, Burns' offense doesn't play to Phillips or Romo's strengths. So when they are in there, we are left with run-QB draw-single read, tuck and run, so like Baylor in the second half, everybody is going to put eight in the box.
Phil Bennett will lose his job because he didn't develop Chris Phillips. I said it first about 1 1/2 years ago-it will come to pass. By nitefall of September 17 the SMU QB position will look like a disaster area. There is nothing wrong with a Coach going with the QB he feels best with-but there is also nothing wrong with evaluationg a 4th year coach on his recruitment, evaluation and development of QBs and for that Bennett gets a Big Fat F. This has been 4 of the worst QBed teams in the history of SMU football and Bennett makes Cavan look like a QB genius.
I want Phillips on the field, but I don't for one minute think it has anything to do with race that he isnt. Come on.
And Blog, how can you say that Eckert is best suited to the offense? Maybe Eckert is best suited for what Burns would like to do on paper or what he can do against San Jose State occasionally, but we absolutely 100% have to have a mobile qb on the field against most teams we play. We have not shown we can protect the qb and create any kind of a pocket to pass from in forever.
Everybody needs to relax. The guy's got 2 full years of eligibility left after this one. We're going to see plenty of CP.
That said, I'm glad we're starting Romo. After watching the Baylor vid, I think it would be a good idea if we never, ever, ever see Eckert again. He might be the worst QB since Craig Morton.
Splitting hairs. While mismanagement (and just bad luck) of the QB position may be a factor, I doubt the failure to develop a kid that is still just a RS Sophmore is going to cost him his job. Even if Phillips were starting, he would be making a lot of mistakes and Burns' offense would be a disaster.
