Rendezvous - do it. It is worth the wait. Now, you Texans need to remember that real barbecue comes from a pig, not a cow... once you accept that you'll be embraced by the barbecue goodness that is Memphis.

If you're a bit more daring, go to Interstate Barbecue. Even better... in fact, probably the best in the area. The Neely family has been putting out great barbecue for as long as I can remember.

For your libations and beverages of an adult nature, do not fear Beale Street. Plenty of good spots to wet your whistle and tune up properly before or after a game. Hit Silky's with your group and have a Diver before the game... then put on your Smurf costume and cheer on the Mustangs.

Touristy and all, see the ducks at the Peabody if you haven't seen them before. It's just one of those things you're supposed to see in Memphis.

Do not go to Graceland... unless you're not old enough to remember the 70s. If you are, you've seen it before even if it wasn't in a grand old home that was ruined by that decade's poor taste.

I grew up in Memphis, too, and absolutely agree with everything here (ESPECIALLY the comments on bbq!), except Graceland. If you visit Memphis, you must go pay homage.

Was in Memphis for work about a yr ago and hit up 'Hog and Hominy'...really enjoyed it. Mind u, I was prob in town for all 14 hrs so my basis of comparison is limited.

The poultry at Cozy Corner is the best in town -- try the smoked turkey sandwich or the cornish game hen. Restaurant looks a little sketchy from the outside, but don't let that deter you.

For ribs and shoulder you can't go wrong with Central or the Barbecue Shop on Madison -- and they both are close to the FedEx Forum.

Gus's is the world's greatest fried chicken -- they don't drop it into the grease until you place your order.

For a downtown breakfast go to the Arcade at So. Main and G.E. Patterson for the sweet potato pancakes. Good country plate lunches as well.

Rum Boogie or BB King's for live music.

The Beale Street/Peabody/So. Main areas are pedestrian friendly, but there are some nearby streets where situational awareness is important.

Need a haircut while you are in town? See Billy or Davey at Roman Palace on Poplar. Their clientele is heavy on politicians and cops, so it's a great place for local news. And if you 're looking for an Elvis fix, they are cousins to The King.

Anyone able to make it to Memphis probably has made their plans by now but I think ojapony had it about right. If you visit Memphis you go to Rendezvou, the Peabody and its ducks, Beale Street and Graceland and not necessarily in that order. Interstate would top my list for a second BBQ meal, or if you don't have time to wait at Rendezvou. If you reach Memphis by air, I think there is an Interstate branch at the airport. Depending on your interests the Civil Rights Museum and the Rock and Soul Museum are must visits also, IMO.

For aviation buffs, Graceland is about the only place in the world where a Convair 880 is on display. Real Elvis fans might go as far as Tupelo but that's about a 100 miles from the airport. If you want to throw some money on the floor Tunica is closer. Blues fans might go further down Hiway 61 to the Crossroads and there are improbable tamales in Clarksdale.

But hey, today is about the Mustangs and we hope the next couple of days.

Go Ponies!
