NEW YORK – Dan Hurley was 8 or 9, in a store at Madison Square Garden checking out Cincinnati Bengals merchandise, when he had his "Joe Greene moment."

Bobby Hurley, who led Duke to the NCAA men's national championship in 1991 and 1992, is now an assistant coach at Wagner College.


"Max Montoya (the then-Pro Bowl Bengals guard) happened to be there," Hurley said. "He said, 'Are you a Bengals fan in New York?' He bought me a hat and a jersey and signed them."

Hurley, now 39 and in his second year as men's basketball coach at Wagner College, remains a fan.

His devotion to the Bengals, who haven't won a playoff game in the past 20 years, hasn't always paid dividends. But it shows the importance of loyalty to Hurley, whether he's choosing a team, a coaching staff or recruits. So far, those choices are producing results at Wagner, in Staten Island, N.Y., not far from Hurley's father, Bob, and his New Jersey roots.

With brother Bobby as an assistant, Dan Hurley has the Seahawks 14-3, their best start in 56 years, and riding a seven-game winning streak. Wagner is 5-1 in the Northeast Conference, tied for second heading into Thursday's game at St. Francis (N.Y.), which is 8-9, 5-1.

Part of me thinks that it would be a smart move for whatever head coach we get to tap Bernie Fine as an assistant coach. They guy knows BE hoops and what we'll be facing. I don't think he should be head coach, but a change of scenery which would include leaving his cougar wife in Syracuse might be a good idea.

Okay, Bernie was a joke and, this is not "realistic", but its worth mentioning. Jim Boeheim is ticked that Syracuse is leaving the Big East. He also is ticked at Syracuse for making him fire Bernie Fine. Perhaps a warmer climate for is last few years might suit him well, and he would keep being able to make the drink circuit with his BE buddies.

It's funny, there are several current coaches, should they be fired, that could make a good hire for SMU. Sadler wouldn't be awful, though he plays pretty slow. Seth Greenburg would be a slam dunk, IMO. I'd interview Darrin Horn as well, but he's scary.
