I am not anti-JJ and respect his FB credentials; however, I have never understood his lack of enthusiasm in promoting the program to students, alums, fans and recruits. Did JJ feel he bore no responsibility in creating excitement? Granted, our student body is easily distracted and has not connected with their role and responsibility for school spirit, but JJ must have felt he did not have to invest any energy to change attitudes outside his locker room.
I think it's because prior to SMU, he never had to. He was a coach in the NFL for a few years, where the teams and the league itself have major marketing campaigns. And then he was at Hawaii, where he was the only game in town. Other than the pro-bowl, he coached literally the only football team in his entire time zone. I think he figured he'd roll into SMU, get some wins, and the crowds would just be bursting through the gates. He has never had to do anything special in the past to market in an area with NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA teams, not to mention Texas, aTm, TCU, Baylor, OU, OSU, etc.
