also, Cavan should have started Ramon his entire senior year instead of switching with Sanders. If Ramon had started the entire year SMU would have been in a bowl game in 1997.

Until Mike Ford blew his knee out he was in line to really put up some numbers. After that he struggled. Then Collins showed up with a veer style offense and McIlhenny to run it and Ford never got much time after the Pony Express was up and running. He finished his eligibility at SMU.

Sorry to disappoint you VarsityShop, but my dad is not working in "some janitor closet". Actually, he plays golf pretty much everyday and gets paid for it. He's already brought over $1 million the UGA football program, and guess what, people actually like him there, contrary to an earlier post that I read that talked about my dad being bitter about losing the starting quarterback position. Good lord, you people really need to move on. I say he's in a heck of a better place now than having to put up with people like you. Why don't you go and fill out an application if you know what this pathetic program needs. I'd love to read the posts about your shortcomings as a coach.

Clearly McCown was totally mishandled and misused at SMU. You don't suddenly drop down one level and become a super star and then go on to become a respectable starter in the NFL without having big time college talent.

Perhaps the worst part of the mishandling of McCown is that we lost his brother Luke as a result. Between the two we would have been set at quarterback for a long time. We all know what happened instead.

Mima -

There are "people like you" following every program in the country - and I would guess there are more crazed lunatics unfairly criticising the Georgia coach today (especially after that Auburn game) then SMU has total fans. I know its different when its a relative, but if you get in coaching you have to have a thick skin - or you shouldn't get in coaching.

Wish I was getting paid to golf - Best of luck to your family.

Trust me, my dad has thick skin. It's just that when I have to read all this negativity about a situation that has ultimately been handled the way so many people wanted, it really gets to me. My dad got FIRED, what more do you want? Get off his back and realize that he does still have family and people that support him in Dallas, including my husband that played all four years for him and was his first recruit as the SMU football coach. Again, it's time to move on. And before any of you say it, no my dad does not know that I have made these posts, nor would he bother himself by reading this.

Mima,
You may take after your father in many ways, but obviously having a thick skin is not one of them. The fact is that your father was paid a heck of a lot of money and delivered my alma mater absolutely nothing in return. Mike Cavan obviously understands that being a D-1 football coach invites criticism from passionate fans. It goes with the territory of a high paying, high profile position. Your father's record is what it is and we, the devoted Mustang faithful, will discuss it as part of our program's history. Please understand that none of this is personal. I had the opportunity to meet your father on many occasions and always found him to be a warm and pleasant individual. However, I'm sure I don't need to tell you that when talking football, ultimately only two things matter: Wins and losses. I hate to sound harsh, but that is reality.

I think we can for sure agree it is time to move on - This string of posts was stupid to begin with and has not gotten any better with age. Look out the windshild folks - there is no need for a rearview mirror.

You should read Santayana.

"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. This is the condition of children and barbarians, in which instinct has learned nothing from experience."

George Santayana, The Life of Reason, Volume 1, 1905

You all have good points, so enough said.

My only question is this, Why do you all not identify yourselves? Maybe if you did, then your criticism would be respected, probably not welcome, but definitely respected.

MIMA....I am glad you love and support your dad, but your Dad was in a public position and someone (not me) placed a poll on this site about how your Dad handled a player. I do not think your Dad handled that player very well. Of course your Dad is not working in a "janitors closet" in Georgia, that was a "figure of speech". I am happy he is happy playing golf, I am glad he is playing golf. I hope your Dad does a great job raising money for Georgia, I think that's where his heart was anyway. I am sorry it didn't work out here for your Dad. I wish he would have been able to turn it around for SMU. It absolutely was not all his fault, but I think he could have done a better job. Obviously others did too or he would not have been released. Mike Cavan should be proud of his daughter standing up for him.
