Was McCown's Talent Squandered?
Fellas,
I know Stallion will throw up mad numbers against this post, but McCown does not look bad for the Cardinals. Even with the 40 year old Emmitt in the backfield and an okay OL, McCown moves the ball. After watching him at SMU, this shocks me beyond belief. I laughed when the Cardinals drafted him in the 3rd round (I thought it was another instance of that idiot Bidwell's reign).
Yesterday, as we watched him play against the Giants, my wife and I sat and talked about how his talent was wasted at SMU. It is really too bad, because he really could have turned around this program.
Sir

what the hell are you talking about-he was 12 for 24 for 74 yards net in the passing game-90 yards total-2.8 yards per play in the passing game. Last week he had 9 yards per completion. A couple of weeks ago he was 6-20 in a game until a closing drive when his team was 30 points down. I will say one thing the Cardinals realized how bad he really is throwing the ball down field so they are smart enough to throw rarely and short so he doesn't screw up. I guarantee you he is at the bottom of the barrell when it comes to downfield plays in the NFL. Finally how in the hell was career of the "GREATEST PLAYER IN SAM HOUSTON ST." history squandered at SMU when he quit on the team because he was too scared a 6-0 banjo picker was going to steal his job. He started just about every game except after going 1-7 and personally turning the ball over 8 times in two games. Believe we won the next game. Cavan let McCown back into the starting lineup by the season's end. McCown's on-field performance at SMU would not even place him in the Top 20 QBs to play at SMU.

Stallion,
Young QB's take time to develop. I don't think McCown will be a star, but I do think he has the talent to be in the league for 10 years. Early in the season, he had the cards stacked against him with injuries to Bolden and Johnson. He was also a first-time starter. Whether you choose to admit it, the Cardinals are winning some games.
He did win that opener against Kansas, which is our biggest win in the last five or six years.
Sir

Well answer me this. What other Mustang QB post-DP could be starting in the NFL, even for the lowly Cardinals? How many of our QB’s post DP have been drafted and finally, how many SMU Mustangs post DP have been drafted in the 3rd round or higher?
Arizona did not take a flyer on him; he was expected to go in the third round.
BTW, I personally saw McCown on 3 occasions, none of them pretty. I would have never imagined this level of success.

If you read my original post, I did not state I was ever enamored with McCown while he was at SMU. I agree with many of the subsequent posters (Like SoCal_Pony). I am personally shocked by his success in the NFL.
Obviously, scouts and coaches (Dennis Green) think he has something. I just think it is sad that it was squandered at SMU. Pro talent at QB should not be squandered in a place as desperate as Gerald Ford Stadium.

and I think it's pretty desperate when SMU fans have to grasp onto a traitor to the program and a quitter just to point to a former SMU player in the NFL. I'm sure they'd love to hear about McCown though on the Sam Houston St. website. Only at SMU will you find the greatest athlete in SMU history roundly booed and a traitor/quitter roundly cheered.

If you are going to ask the question you also need to ask why? The lack of a line that pass protected? The lack of an appropriate offense? Whatever.
Like OP said, we are better off looking to a future from the stand point of a 2 game winning streak than rehashing this.

Stallion cant admit he was wrong.
Stallion is just "sour grapes" over Josh because Josh is playing in the NFL and Stallion's "boyfriend" Cavan is working in some janitor closet at the Georgia sports department.
Josh getting playing time in the NFL blows away Stallion's theory about poor old Mike Cavan being such a victim. If Cavan was such a "victim" then why hasn't another team given him a job even as an Asst. Coach? Why isn't Cavan in the NFL like Rossley? All questions Stallion dodges and refuses to answer.
Hell Cavan had a starting NFL Quarterback here at SMU and ran the fine young man off.
I don't blame Josh a bit for escaping Stallion's idol Mike Cavan.
