Leota vs. Griffin

Having seen them play twice this year, I think Leota is the better choice of the two.

Griffin is physically very imposing but he takes a lot of plays off. If they ran right at him he would of course make the play, but couldn't really pursue anything laterally.

Leota brings it on every down. Plus, I think he has the athleticism to move to ILB or the body frame to bulk up to a D1 DLman. He could go either way and he's a competitive s.o.b.

We should by all means establish a pipeline to Trinity High School.

This ain't 1968. You've got to be able to cover the field these days.

No kidding. Two key words:

"Plus, I think he has the athleticism to move to ILB..."

and

"Can you imagine a 280-pound ILB who can run?????"

By definition, each word suggests a lack of certainty, almost nothing more than idle speculation. Nobody said "by all means, play this young man at linebacker or send him packing!" Recruiting, for everyone who hasn't seen these players and who is not a trained evaluator of talent, is guesswork. It's fun to wonder how a certain player might fit in on one team or another.

At least the first guy, SMUbob, reports to have seen Leota play, which is more than any of the rest of us can say, you included. If he has the athleticism SMUbob seems to think he has - based on that silly eye-witness business - maybe he can actually "cover the field." Or maybe he can't - nobody said he could, just that they "think" he could, and "imagine" what it would be like to have a guy like that. Why jump all over people who are merely wondering?

This guy could start all four years if you put him at DE where he belongs.

because simply you can't play middle LB at 280 pounds-its laughable-its more than speed, its agility and quickness. That's 30 pounds more than any starting LB in the Big 12 last year.

How about a 280 lb RB - JJ used a pretty big one at UH -

All in fun - its not like we dont have the need and the opportunity on our D-line from what we saw last year

I'd argue there's opportunities at every defensive postion.

Mao Leota was rated 3 stars pre-season by Tom Lemming. He also rated him as the 6th best DT in the state. "He's an unusual athlete. He played FB and DT, but has the build, strength, and instincts to make an outstanding NG. I was also impressed with him as a FB. He is almost impossible to stop between the tackles, and runs low to the ground with great burst, strength, and balance. On defense it almost looks like he's toying with the blockers. He dominates at the point of attack and surprises people with his burst and closing speed. A very talented ball player who just needs to find a position." Rushed for over 500 yards on offense and totaled over 50 tackles on defense. GPA is over 2.0.
