1. We decide to wear throwback unis, probably for the first time in history.
2. We don't promote the fact we're wearing throwbacks, or tell anyone why.
3. No one from SMU or otherwise is there to photograph it.
4. You can't buy the throwbacks, or bid on them in an auction fundraiser.
Is this what a Top 25 program does to promote itself?
i agree on all points. this should have been marketed. not so much better, but marketed period. i had no idea it was alumni night or anything until i walked in

Yep. That's why we're S.M. Whooooo???
Too bad. It was a gorgeous look, too.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Lord knows we need more promotion at SMU, but I really don't see where they dropped the ball here. Is there really anyone out there that would have come to the game if only they had known it was alumni nite? It's pretty obvious that the alumni knew it was their nite.
I think the main reason those unis were so sharp is because the red was actually crimson.

After all, isn't "crimson" the real school colors? It's much better than red or dark red any ol day. And only God knows why it's so hard for us to make such an easy decision to use crimson - our true school color???!!!

I assume we wore the throwback unis because it was basketball player alumni night. They recognized about 30 or so former players who came to the game.
But it is a shame we didn't promote it more, or even make them available for purchase. Sure hope they do it again at some point because they looked sharp.
Granted, if they had been true throwbacks, they would have been the short shorts, with the more narrow straps over the shoulders.

I think you just answered your own question. Lord knows, indeed, we need more promotion at SMU.
Would anyone have shown up just because it was alumni night? Or just because we wore throwbacks? Maybe a few people who were on the fence about going to the game, if only to get a peek at the unis or a former player they remember. That's enough to make it worthwhile.
Some basic promotion would have created a little bit of buzz about SMU basketball. Right now there is zero. Not all promotions have to bring in thousands of paying customers. You just want people to think, for one second during the day, about SMU. That's all it takes to keep from becoming irrelevant, which SMU already is to way too many people.
And most of all, promotion tells people you think your product is worthy of attention. If you don't think your product is worth promoting, why should anyone else? Someone definitely dropped the ball here, or else SMU has decided to give up on this basketball season - and I don't think that's the case.

Then you'll have a hard time getting anyone's attention when you do have a product worth promoting. The point is to stay relevant and get SMU's brand out there. Even with a young, struggling team, you can still have a good time at an SMU game. The Rangers have been filling their ballpark for years with a sorry product. Don't sell the team, sell the experience of going to a game.
I would have promoted the alumni night with a newspaper ad, banner ads on the official website, etc. I would list the alums coming back that people would recognize and maybe be interested in seeing again. They don't have to be superstars, just players people remember watching when they were students here or whatever.
