I have made some phone calls, and apparently this decision is not final.. but who knows if you can believe word of mouth.. I as well am hoping he didn't quit, if anything, he can finish getting his degree and help support his family and daughter.
Guess we can all just sit on the edge of our seats and wait and see..

I'm with papa, whether you think BLM is the future or not, Willis got really shortchanged at SMU. Don't tell me he should have been just happy to have a schollie either, thats crap. No way a guy with his performance, talent and experience should have basically been shoved so far down the depth chart behind freshmen that he was forced to switch positions. Frankly i personally think less of JJ as a coach because of it. Not that my opinion matters and yes its hindsight now, but that season last year was beyond pathetic, probably even the worst of the post DP era all things considered. Good luck Willis, what you did on the field in 2006 and 2007 was far more enjoyable to watch than the stuff the 2008 mustangs were throwing down and some people do recognize it.

Thanks jwillfan.... I was kind of waiting to hear something like this. The reason we love the guy and the reason he's gotten in trouble a couple times, is that he's emotional and he really carries that.
I'm not going to be surprised if he takes a day and changes his mind. Either way, I certainly wish him the best.

Its also too bad that JJ decided he was going to make that statement to the team by demoting Will.
Will was a damn good qb who got the shaft imo.
This is dead on. I love that June Jones is here, and think we will challenge for tops in the conference for years to come. But his demotion of Willis was a June Jones ego trip. He wanted his guy and he got it. Still think Willis would have been the best option last year and this year. Then Bo could take over after redshirting...

I will do the best that I can to keep you up-to-date with the information that I know.
But just like everyone else, he has been through alot with SMU but at the same time, it has made him into a much stronger more better athelete, friend, father, and more so..person. He has learned alot, and if he leaves now.. Justin I would take that and run with it. (but dont go too soon, we want to see you on the field this season)

Oh ok......
So you can evaluate football quarterbacks better than June Jones?
Just how many NFL Players have you coached or placed into the NFL?
How many NFL teams have hired you?
How many bowl teams have you coached?
Has anyone been willing to pay you a million dollars plus a year to coach football?
"that season last year was beyond pathetic"
Yeah it was soooooooooooo much better the year before when
we won one game with Justin Willis as the QB.

How do we know that Willis could have even run this offense..? I think its [deleted] we assume that it was a JJ ego thing. Did anybody watch 2007, JW made poor decisions all year and was anything but a pocket passer with accuracy as JJ needs...
Not taking anything away from the guy as he owns a bunch of records, but not sure it was all ego..

Best wishes to Justin Willis regardless of what happens. If he decides to stay at SMU or if he goes to a D1AA school where he can play immediately, either way I wish the young man well.

ah, the JJ is god and you aren't argument huh? The guy might have made a mistake or two in his football career, who knows. No one, not even JJ himself, truly knows how Willis would have developed in JJs offense (remember Willis was a young guy when JJ took over who was just starting to benefit from his experience), but one thing was demonstrated last year to anyone willing to be honest with themselves: BLM was totally unprepared to lead a D-1 team as a true freshman.

Good luck to Justin Willis. That being said, last year Jones picked the best available qb to lead the Ponies. It wasn't an ego trip or JJ strutting himself to show he was the "new sheriff in town," JJ wanted to win like everyone else but he picked a qb he thought showed the most understanding of his offense and made the throws he expected. Bo didn't really deliver but he was the best available. Same with all the other positions, he played the best, probably used some he wanted to redshirt but the cupboard was bare so he played the fresmen, rsfreshmen and sophomores and the team took it on the chin at 1-11. But as SMU picks up better fb players, the team will progress and I see them winning 6 games this year. The r n' s is not an easy offense to learn nor is it an offense that is easily stopped, it will score, now if SMU wins the turn over battle, I believe the game is won.

jtSTEER ....LOL...I knew you'd come racing out of the woodwork to support anyone and everyone taking shots at and questioning the decisions of our head coach the week before our home opener. Golly Gee how odd is it to tend to agree with someone that has actually accomplished something on the football field in big ways instead of "know-it-all backseat drivers" sitting at a computer pretending they know more than June Jones about how to pick starting quarterbacks?

Too bad for Justin. It seriously appeared he really has put forth a lot of effort and class to do the right thing in the face of much adversity. Is is too late to change the face on ticket #5?

Dear Justin:
Given the day you had yesterday, I can understand the sting of not being named on of the first 4. You are a young man with a bright future. I admire the way you push through adversity and challenge.
If you happen to read this, walk right back into Coach Jone's office and ask to play your senior year for SMU. Enjoy makeing at least some catches, some touchdowns. Give this year the opportunity to be football special for you.
Get your degree and then open your wings and take off for your life's journey.
Yes, you about the age on my sons, so sorry if this sounds like a lecture.
Peace be with you always.

No you are wrong June did not pick the best QB to lead this team last year. In fact the best QB this year has just quit, and I dont blame him, why play for a guy who doesnt want you, for team who probably wasnt going anywhere this year anyway. It is so much a person can take before they decide just walk away from it.
