I said last week that kicking in pregame/practice and kicking during the game are two different things. From what I hear, he does just fine in practice. Just needs to calm his nerves during the game somehow.

Actually I think JJ did put an ad in the paper last year for a kicker or at least I thought I read that somewhere.

You see when he hits the ball, he strikes it really solid, just needs to calm the nerves and work on the accuracy.

Also, Loftus probally needs his own thread, but I will put it here. Very Solid job of punting tonight, he flilpped the field several times tonight when it mattered. Hell, that time he got roughed, the rush was coming...he stood there and popped a 62 yard punt, even though it didnt count because of the penalty.

he had a couple of bad games so far, but tonight, he was as good as any punter on a top 10 team in the country.

Nice Job Loftus!!!!!!

I was wondering.... If it doesn't work from like 15 yards why the hell would it work anywhere else might as well try another play and go for the TD

If he doesn't get rid of the jitters
it will probably cost us a game before the season's over.
Hasn't this kid already missed at least one extra point?
Is there a backup? Could the backup be any worse?

I know he missed at least one extra point last year, and he missed one against tcu last week. What is he on f/g's this year 5-11? He kinda stinks.

The only excuse I could come up with for the last 2 was that he got hit pretty [deleted] the roughing the kicker play. But yes, we do need a kicker that can hit from 40 in always and 40 out almost always.

Wasn't Loftus the one that was roughed?

Not according to the announcers (UTEP announcers) on firstrow feed. I could not see the number but if they were right it was Hover and Loftus punted after the roughing.

Loftus did all of the punting before that as well. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/b ... page=plays

exactly. GG looks great in practice as well, but getting him under the lights has had much different results.

His misses were struck solid and flew well, they just went wide right...he had some solid moments last year, maybe he is just in a funk that he can snap out of....

I hate field goal misses, but he is striking the ball.....I think we have all seen sub par SMU kickers in the past float up woundend ducks or blade one that gets about 5 feet off the ground.

Hover is all we got, He got good distance tonight and struck em solid, he just needs to swing it over about 10 feet left. I think he can work through it.

Loftus was recruited to be our kicker and punter. He was hyped to be great at kickoffs, excellent at extra points and field goals and a very representative punter. I am not sure he has really delivered in any aspect. It is incumbent on the coaching staff to have top level kickers/punters; however, too many programs unbelievably ignore kicking as one of the most important element to every game. Offering a scholarship to a kicker/punter is often regarded as a wasted scholarship. In my view a program should bring in a top kicker and punter every 3 years to insure the roster has a quality starter and back up in waiting.
