Can someone explain the hilarious comment to me that SMU fits in great with the SEC?

I see virtually no similarities whatsoever (with the exception of Vanderbilt. And every conference has their vanderbilt.)
Consider this scenario in 5-10 years: The New Big East loses steam and the basketball schools decide to leave.
Georgetown helped found the Big East. It's staying.

Besides, with its odd combination of high wattage I-A basketball and low wattage I-AA football, it has nowhere else to go.

SMU has no place in SEC Dallas media market does. Can SMU make itself good enough to not ruin it?

1) Mid-sized private school with political connections, tradition, name recognition and deep pockets;
2) Location in a major market that SEC schools/fans will travel to;
3) Opens new market to a conference that A&M only partially opens up;
4) Fertile recruting grounds;
5) Once a BCS national championship game involves a 2 loss team the big boys will realize that perhaps adding a 'patsy' could help the conference over-all (I'd cherish the patsy/underdog roll rather than seeing SMU as 'king of the has beens');
6) We think we're better than everyone else; perfect fit for the SEC.

we're too good for the SeC. Even A&M can do well there. We need to join the Big 12 so we can beat up on UT like everyone else.

A&M has double the amount of living alumni in Dallas.

Right, and how many SEC games get regularly played in Dallas? I think SMU to SEC is crazy talk for now, but I get that idea that we would provide 4-5 games a year where two SEC teams would be playing in Dallas. I'm sure Univ of Florida has more alumni than UM in Miami, but that doesn't mean UF owns the south Florida market. Same basic idea.

A&M has double the amount of living alumni in Dallas.

If alumni were relevant in the media market discussion there wouldn't be media market discussion and the SWC would still exist. And Notre Dame wouldn't have it's own media deal unless they have 100000 undergrads.

DFW T-shirt fans out number UT & aggy alumni in DFW by far. That's where the money is. Play regular SEC games in Dallas and you could see A&M replace UT as the default Texas team in half the state.
