Let's Talk Realignment Again!
Hopefully this will provide a momentary distraction from all of the Tulane game hand-wringing and the Fire June talk...
While the benefits of our move to the Big East remain to be seen, a 16 team Big 12 (Big 16?) MUST be our goal in the long term. Consider this scenario in 5-10 years:
The New Big East loses steam and the basketball schools decide to leave.
Rutgers and UConn are picked up by the ACC to get to 16
The Big 12 adds Louisville, Cincinnati, UCF, USF, SMU, and Houston. This gives the Big 12 new markets in the Midwest and Florida and further solidifies its hold on Texas thus locking out the SEC.
New Big 12/16 North Division - OU, OSU, Kansas, Kansas St., Louisville, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Iowa St.
New Big 12/16 South Division - SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Houston, UCF, USF
Play 2 non-conference games, 7 divisional games, and 3 cross divisional games each season.
If we ever want to be relevant in the DFW market, this is what needs to happen. The Big East is definitely better than where we are now and will be great for basketball, but in football we will still be the 3rd or 4th best story in Metroplex college football each weekend behind UT, A&M, and (gag) TCU/Baylor.
On top of this we build the IPF, expand Ford by enclosing the open end on Mockingbird, and renovate/expand the concourses to give it a more modern feel. I have now been to new Amon Carter as well as Apogee up at UNT and both are excellent facilities. I agree with another post that says Ford is becoming obsolete despite being just over a decade old.
I am just as disappointed as anyone about the results so far this season as well as the direction the program appears to be going under June, but I am not giving up on SMU football yet. Having only been involved since 2003, I owe it to the alumni and fans who stuck around far longer and suffered through even more losing seasons in the 90s and early 2000s.
I will be at the game tonight, I will continue to buy season tickets, and I will continue to contribute to the Mustang Club not because I support a particular coach or administrator but because I love SMU and it's the right thing to do. Pony up.

Re: Let's Talk Realignment Again!
Personally, I think the SEC would be a better goal than the Big-12. I know that getting into either conference is a laughable pipe-dream right now. But if we are talking long-term strategic goals, I think the SEC would be a better fit. Plus, we have something potentially desirable to the SEC with our presence in Dallas. The Big-12 has no need for another DFW school. So assuming we were to establish the conditions to make ourselves attractive to a top-tier conference (and we are nowhere near getting there), the SEC would be a good thing to shoot for.

I agree 100% with everything you said. SEC is a better fit wholistically. Our football / basketball need to be consitantly good for them to consider us. If we are good NC contenders if FB and BB... the SEC would be happily add SMU, the DFW market, an A&M rival, and some academic prestige (much needed).

We'll never be in a conference with Texas again and the Big 12 won't be adding 6 schools at once, especially the ones you listed.

These realignment wish lists were tiresome before, and they are tiresome now. We won't be going anywhere until we fix our problem on the field, and butts in the stands.

We are not even in the discussion unless Larry Brown makes us a player. No one wants what we currently have to offer.

Re: Let's Talk Realignment Again!
Drop the discussion and embrace the (Big) East. If in five years, college sports needs realignment and we bring something special, that is a separate discussion. In the meantime, we have work to do and teams to grow.

I'm sure this is beating a dead horse, but _we_ don't want to be in the Big 12. I'd rather be in the Big 10 before the Big 12. Personally, I think the Big East is a good move.
Now where you may or may not agree...
We clearly can't compete with the Texas market for football schools and television coverage right now (see UT, A&M, TCU, Tech, and Baylor). We need to get more coverage elsewhere... assuming we can win to get people to want to watch us.

The Big 12 doesn't want us.
ATM, we should just be happy that the Big East does.

My primary concern is the 2013 Superbowl at Amon Carter Stadium!

Let's beat Houston first.
