I honestly think some arrangement is made for him to "retire" from SMU at the end of the year. Not get fired (which, though many would like to see it, actually hurts our ability to attract a quality replacement), but some sort of settlement that allows SMU to thank him for resurrecting the program and allows him to leave with his ego intact and leaves open the door for another opportunity (hopefully someplace far, far away). He doesn't want to be here, many don't want him here, and when you combine that mutual desire it is amazing how financial and other details magically get resolved. I think he is going to pour whatever he has left in the tank into beating Tulsa and winning whatever bowl game so he can say "I did what I came to do here" and ride off into the Hawaiian sunset. Just my gut feeling on how the politics of the move will play out.
"I don't think anyone around the country has any idea how good we are going to be." - Coach Justin Stepp
My understanding as to the contract is the same as stallion's.
I cheer for SMU. I want SMU to win. I want SMU to beat Tulsa. I want to go to a bowl. Any bowl. I like the idea of going to 4 consecutive bowls. While I have a lot of issues with June and this team, I don't look forward to the chaos a coaching search will bring.
That being said, in college sports, you either change coaches a year too early or a year too late. I think we all see where this is going.

Keeping June for another year going into the Big East is going to deepen the hole we will have to climb out of if we want to be relevant. He has to go, and if losing one more game means that, so be it for the sake of a better SMU football program in a few years. He's done enough irreparable damage with his awful recruiting.

Whether we beat Tulsa or not should not change the decision on whether or not to keep him. If our AD knows his craft, he will not base his decision on the outcome of Saturday's game. He will use the last 5 years and especially this season as a whole as well as recruiting and budget to determine his decision. My hope is that we win on Saturday, go bowling, win our bowl game and then make major changes to the coaching staff. Whether June Jones stays or goes, frankly I don't care. I don't care who coaches SMU as long as we win. The last few years have been much better than the last 20+ years so I am happy with the results of the last few years as a whole. Realistically, you aren't going to go from bottom 10 to national powerhouse in an instant. If you think rationally and look back at the day June Jones was hired would you not have gladly accepted going to a bowl game the 4th or 5th season of his tenure? I know I would have. While we have taken a step back this season, it is not the end of the world. You cannot blame June Jones for our ineptness the past 20+ seasons. He can only do so much. Right now everyone is riding high with Larry Brown, but I guarantee you if we do not get more fans into Moody Coliseum, he will also eventually tire of the situation. I am not saying that I am not very concerned about the future of SMU football because frankly I am. However, I think some of you need to take a step back and assess SMU football as a whole and realistically determine what kind of program we can be.
If things are truly as negative as many of you claim they are, I know I definitely want to go to a bowl game this season because it looks like it may be a long time before we go bowling again.

The only reason I see Jones leaving early on his own is he sees the future the same way most of us do. If he believes his team cannot be competitive the next two years then he may try to work out an early exit so that he is not embarrassed by our poor performance. Assuming he is not happy here, I do not think that will be enough to cause him to give up the money. He only gives up the money, if he has saved enough and believes his legacy is in danger.

Did you see what June did to his OWN recruiting class last year with his ASU antics? Have you seen this year's recruiting class not to mention the two recent decommits who were among the best players? Have you seen who we lost to this year and the margin of loss? Yes he did get us up to the next level but he is getting paid $2.2 milion to take us into the Top 20, NOT vacation for 4 months out of the year in Hawaii and totally ignore his obligation to improve this program in any way that he can especially through recruiting. From what I have read, his recruiters have not reached out to most of the top football programs in Dallas and the surrounding suburbs and he has had almost NO contact with any of the top local highschool coaches. Most top recruits haven't received a phone call. And recruits that try to contact us find it very difficult! One recruit, who had numerous offers, was finally contacted within the last couple of weeks and told of our interest. He responded that he was very interested in us and wondered why he hadn't been contacted. The answer was that he had so many offers that the coach didn't think he would be interested in us. Amazing and INEXCUSABLE! Time for June to permanently return to Hawaii! IMHO
Everything is pointing to his leaving-it is all unraveling before our eyes-recruits bolting etc.,etc. -let's all move on please-It is just time for change and we all feel it.
If the BE collapses as its looking that way right now. I expect SMU to keep him as the showing of the white flag on our shot at college football. What would be the point to buy him out if we will be going right back to Cupcake USA. Win or lose, we are irrelevant.
