OK- mexm - who would you suggest? We need a coach who will be aggressive, recruit, hire good assistants and can build a team that will move to the next level.

I am not trying to start a fight, but Sonny Dikes is not on anyone's short list right now . Like it or not his predecessor’s (Dooley’s) record at the University of Tennessee suggest that just maybe LaTech is not the coaching situation that trains young BCS coaches that everyone believed. He has tried, but no one has taken the bait. The yearend losses also hurt his chances.

He's on one team's short list and there will be more regardless of what happened with Derek Dooley.

Plus if he came here, he would immediately begin a personal campaign to trade up to a better program! Be careful what you wish for.
1. He beat Idaho 70-28
2. His losses against utah st and SJS were against the #18 and 24 teams in the country- each by 1 TD and one of which in OT.
3. His third loss was against TAMU, the #10 team in the country, by 2 points. The same TAMU that beat SMU 48-3.
4. HAVE YOU BEEN DRINKING!?

Sonny Dykes is 2012 Kevin Sumlin. He is on a lot of folks" short list.

Whose short list? That powerhouse Cal? An awful lot of other jobs out there.
As far as those losses, the very same people calling for June's head today would have been calling for Dyke's head had he been here--just saying...("As to have I been drinking? No, to early in the day, just misread the LaTech athletic board re: Idaho--my fault).
Take a look at our overall historical record. Not many decades SMU even had a winning record--One?
Give any past SMU team having a .500 record or better and credit them with a minor bowl invite and you would find that SMU would have never had four bowls (minor or not) in our school's history.
Those of you that want to fire June are basically upset over the ASU fiasco (not ignoring recruiting), but what would Sonny Dykes do immediately if he came here? He would immediately be looking to trade up.
SMU is a difficult place to win. It takes a seasoned head coach to survive here with all the politics and conflict within the school. Same reason Brown was a wise choice forced upon us by necessity. A young coach gets eaten alive in this environment.
Just asking you people to take a dose of reality.

Actually the Houston Cougars missed the boat on this one. They actually had a job opening last season and to me it was a no-brainer then. In our case it involves swallowing Jone's contract and then outbidding many BCS schools.[/quote]
Actually we did talk to him, Dykes said no.

He chose LTU over UH? That isn't a good sign in multiple respects.

You quoted incorrectly. Nonetheless, I did not realize that! I remember reading the candidates listed by the Houston Chronicle, but don't remember Dykes removing his name from the search. That really is worse than not wanting him. Then again, UH doesn't really pay well so I guess it may have been all about the money.

No, UH pays more than La Tech. He just said if he took it, it was only going to be as a stepping stone job. So I guess you can say it was no for both sides. One of the main reasons Levine was hired was because he said he wanted to stay coach at UH for a long time a'la JoePa, Petersen, Bowden or Patterson.

You might want to explain that in a little more detail.
Reality is that from our inception into college FB in 1916 until the DP in 1986, SMU had a winning record above .500 while playing in the highly regarded SWC.

MM,
1) You are correct. The same people calling for JJ's head would also be calling for Dyke's head if we paid him top $ and he recruited as poorly as JJ does. What is so difficult to understand about that.
2) For the 7 decades from 1920's to 1980's, SMU had a winning record in 4 of those decades, not 1 as you claim. Also, in the 1950's, we were 1 game below .500
3) Most ridiculous statement of all. From 1916 to 1986 I counted 31 times SMU would have qualified for a Bowl game per your criteria, not 4 as you claim. I excluded Cavan & PB teams.

I count 19 Division 1-A Coaching vacancies so far-with a bunch more likely as the replacements are named. Still have the NFL to have its say. Should be 20% turnover before its over
