so - as for the trot - the other 125 something college teams are wrong - and we have the secret sauce? as evidenced by the offensive results? I think there is a body of evidence that it is stupid and we need to end it.

I do not believe the trot has anything to do with our offensive problems. That is like saying 95% of passengers in a plane crash had coffee in the morning so drinking coffee causes plane crashes.
There is a myriad of reason that I could list for our offensive woes but not being an offensive guru I will keep them to myself.

Stop ragging on JasonB. I for one appreciate the insight.
As far as June's stubbornness goes, the only real knock I have on him is his replacing of Justin Willis as QB his first year to implement "his" system. I don't think any of you guys will argue that we would have won more games in year 1 of the rebuild with Willis under center.
From there, June has shown the ability to evolve. Year 2 we got Shawnbrey and a running game. Then we got Zack running and this year we added Gilbert running.

I really find this hard to believe. He's shown no examples of adapting or change in philosophy in the past 5 years. Ill believe it when I see it
Well, the read option was one change too late in the season to make much difference
Without the read option, there is no way we get to a bowl game, so I would beg to differ.
Even if Jones had this philosophy with Willis, he was run first and not accurate enough to succeed. Both June and Brown knocked the "point guard" off the team as part of their first action.

Love ya, but we will have to disagree then. Trot = no hurry up. No hurry up = less offensive production. They are very linked.
Imagine, if you can, what would happen in the SEC if any of those teams started having their qb trot over to confer with the HC on EVERY play. They would be the laughingstock of the league, as we are now and will be, until that little June-ism gets tanked.

Only those teams who played in and won bowl games are candidates to laugh at us doing the sideline trot. It's a small population of teams.

i think any team that won more then 6 games in the season can laugh at us for the trot. Its a pretty big group of teams.

I'm wondering if the changes, if they are in fact taking place, are being forced due to possible upgrades of personnel and especially the upgrade of conferences.
The RnS is designed to take what would be considered to be role players on other teams, such as small, quick wide recievers, and make them the primary threats on offense. Gather the right ones, and enough of them, and you have key mismatches against teams, much like ours, that are going to be considered to be at a disatvantage talent-wise - you become the best of a bad lot; Bingo - Success. Were also - hopefully - upgrading on a player-by-player basis on the team. In some ways it's not unlike Army or Navy always going with the option - if they had access to better athletes they probably wouldn't run it.
JJ has publically said that he only wanted to take the rebuilding jobs, because that is where his system is built to do more with less. I willing to guess that had he actually gone to ASU he would NOT have installed a pure RnS, but would have gone to one of the modern hybrids.
But now that we are going to the BE, and are most likely going to see upgrades in the quality of our opponents, he needs to start moving to a scheme more suited for better opponents. He isn't going to be able to finesse his way like he has against UTEP, Tulane, and Rice (at least outside of this year.)
In any case I'm betting he's looking forward to it. I bet he's wanted to do it for years, but stuck to his original gameplan. I've said many times we should run something with a TE, similiar to the Bill's K-Gun offense. Looking forward to seeing it.

You have key mismatches in 1990 against a bunch of run oriented defenses. Now in 2013 every defense is running a pass oriented defense.
We are not the mismatch offense today, that is Navy, or Georgia Tech with Paul Johnson who developed his offense starting with RnS and added more running for that reason.
We are the team in 1986 who is still running the original 1960's era wishbone long after it had been solved and every defense could stop it.

So be it - and the on-the-field results from the past few seasons certainly points to that.
But in terms of philosophy, what JJ was trying to shoot for, I think that's the reason for the changes.
And like I said - I've been for it for a while.

This is was also my immediate reaction in reading this. Hope it ends up being true. We still aren't getting the VOLUME of highly touted recruits we need (1 four star this year with 7 having "BCS offers"), but we ARE getting some studs trickling in a little more in each class the last few years (hope this year's stay committed and qualify).

No offense but it is kind of hard to run an up tempo offense with the sideline trot. Since JasonB said that we are going to a read option offense with a tight end.

I think the combo of Garrett running well and the Phillips influence from Houston is going to push us to a hybrid of the spread and the run and shoot. There are obvious changes in philosophy happening right now...
How do you know for sure that this is happening?

I actually think we kind of agree. What I am saying is that the trot is not the reason our offense is not productive. It may be personnel. It may be play calling. It may be the system. We have a hurry up offense. I have seen us run it. For whatever reason, Jones chooses not to use it. That is not the fault of the trot. That is the fault of the offensive coordinator.
