Change in philosophy

Post by JasonB »

Those calling for changes are surely going to get it...

- addition of the zone read this year
- addition of a tight end scheme this year
- actively recruiting a tight end this year
- recruiting a dual threat qb next year

I think the combo of Garrett running well and the Phillips influence from Houston is going to push us to a hybrid of the spread and the run and shoot. There are obvious changes in philosophy happening right now...

Well aren't you Mr. insider.

Jones is stubborn for 5 years and now changes??? Weird, weird. I wonder what flipped him. Probably seeing his @ss whipped by TE's and dual threat QBs

Either way, bring it on!! Hallelujah

What about tempo, are we going to use the hurry up no huddle?

We need a dual-threat QB so he doesn't get so tired running back and forth to the sideline and the huddle.

Relax about the sideline trot. It's not going anywhere, and has nothing to do with success of the offense. Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan, did it, too.

Nope, not mr. insider. Just saying that there has been a lot of push for change and that is obviously going to happen now.

Honestly, I think Wilson, RG3, Kapernick and Johnny football flipped him.

It used to be that a mobile QB was run first, pass second.

The evolution of the mobile QB into someone who can succeed in a pass first offense, but still be mobile, allows Jones' base idea to be retained, but then open up a running option as well. Every high school in the country uses a spread now, and the pros are moving that way as well. So, there are just going to be fewer and fewer pure drop back QBs to choose from in recruiting.

You get the accuracy he always talks about and combine that with running ability and it makes sense.

One secret behind the success of Sumlin's offense at Houston was that Case was a very mobile QB. Sumlin has always recruited QBs that could move a little bit. I think Phillips has brought that influence with him as well, so that hasn't hurt.

Throw in the size of our young offensive linemen and it makes a lot of sense.

I did notice we offered a dual theat QB for '14 and thought that was interesting.

Better late than never but think we could have had even more success if Jones had done this sooner.

So wouldn't you consider June's buddy Warren Moon a pass first dual threat QB?

I really find this hard to believe. He's shown no examples of adapting or change in philosophy in the past 5 years. Ill believe it when I see it

We offered Devonte Kincaid in 2013 but are going to sign Kolney Cassell. So I'd put the breaks on hope and change

The new slow down no huddle concept. Revolutionary.

and i will argue that the "trot" is a disaster. It precludes a hurry hp offense and is a source of much of our problems on offense Brennan and Chang were good qb's, but they were shredding bad WAC defenses - yes...even worse then CUSA defenses. When you are in a game with a big 12 school we have no shot at winning without using some form of hurry up. The trot must go!

We have a hurry up offense. We have used it late in the first half on occasion and even practiced it in the 3rd quarter of the SFA game this year. It is just that Jones does not want to use it. But if and when he wishes to or decides it is the way to go, we do have it in the playbook.

As far as the trot, if you are not going pure hurry up and snapping every 15 seconds, it is no different that sending in another player with a play or signaling from the sideline while everyone stands there. The lining up and getting a signal might keep the defensive form substituting but many times you want them to sub into something that you want rather than keeping them in what they are playing.

I am much more concerned with the QB doing the trotting than I am with the trotting of the QB.

Well, the read option was one change too late in the season to make much difference
