Ed Burnett sang the best.

He also plays a pretty mean Banjo!

Football: Gary Hammond. Four year starter at FOUR different positions, including QB.

Basketball: Kato Armstrong. I remember the SWC Championship game playing Baylor where the guy behind me kept yelling "Shake and Bake Kato." Armstrong torched the Bears for the crown.

Soccer: Daniel Hernandez. That guy could kick a soccer/football.

ShanDerrick Charles. To me he is the most exciting player I have ever seen in my short time as an SMU fan. What a career he would have had if not for injury. Great guy too.

I know this will reveal the soft and mushy side of jtstang, and clearly it is just a sentimental notion, but I'd have to give props to Mike Bowen and Mitch Glieber and any other guys who came back after the death penalty to help kick-start the football program. The fact that the engine has yet to turn over for twenty years is not to be attributed to these fine and loyal young men.

Jerry 'the jet' LeVias, without him we don't win the SWC championship in
1966 when I was becoming addicted to SMU FOOTBALL :!:

Blake Warren reminded me of him.

Many wonderful choices in all sports. Therefore, here are five swimmers and divers, former National Champions and Olympians, who are simply "world class":

Jerry Heidenreich
Steve Lundquist
Lars Frolander
Janet Ely
Martina Moracova

Plus, hundreds of All-American, Conference Champs, etc.

My favorite is not a player but a man who contributed more to the success of SMU athletics than most of the individuals mentioned on this thread....the infamous Jim Copeland. His enthusiasm and tireless work took SMU to heights it never dreamed about before his tenure. Way to go Jim.
