Who is your favorite mustang of all time?

Post by ALL4SMU »

Who is your favorite mustang of all time and why? I would really like to hear what people thought about this. I am sure Doak Walker will be a fan favorite, but he is not my choice. I will pick someone who played in my time. I would have to say....Chris Bordano....I like everything he stands for as well as how he plays....your thoughts

Soccer fanatic here, and I have several favorite Mustangs.

* Daniel Hernandez (former National Player of the Year at SMU and current member of MLS' Tampa Bay Mutiny) simply saw the game differently than everyone else. He had the inate to get out of triple coverage and make defenders look silly trying to cover him. Had officials called every foul opponents committed against him, he would have destroyed all kinds of records.

* Kara Lee was as polished as an all-around player as anyone, including Mia Hamm (just not quite as fast.)

* Danielle Garrett (now Danielle Fotopolous of the US Women's National Team) was simply overpowering.

* Alan Prampin (now of the Tampa Bay Mutiny in Major League Soccer) was the fastest player I ever saw, and he always had some really goofy haircut that flew behind him in the wind.

* Larry McPhail was the most dominant player in the air I ever saw - won every battle for a headball.

* Kevin Grimes (now assistant SMU men's soccer coach) was perhaps the smartest player ever at SMU - never made a mental error.

Who remembers Todd Alexander? When I was a freshman, the men's hoops team played Florida at Reunion Arena, and I'm pretty sure Florida was ranked in the top 10. Todd Alexander was a short shooting guard who was flinging in 3-pointers all day to lead SMU to the upset. I became an immediate fan of T.A. He and Kato Armstrong made a helluva backcourt.

JIM KREBS.

BASKETBALL ALL-AMERICAN IN THE LATE 1950'S (NBA STAR WITH THE MINN. LAKERS).

HE TOOK US TO THE SEMI'S OF THE NCAA TOURNAMENT (NOW THE FINAL 4), ONLY TO LOOSE TO KANSAS & WILT CHAMBERLAIN. (DOUBLE-OVERTIME, I THINK)

REMEMBER, THE SWC WAS NO BASKETBALL POWERHOUSE BACK THEN.

The Doaker.

There was never one like him before and will never be one like him again. He was a magnificent ambassador for SMU in addition to being a great athlete. He made people who had never even been to Dallas SMU fans.

A force of nature.

Ramon Flanigan. Flanigan brought excitement to every play on some teams that otherwise might not have be very exciting. Admired his guts the way he came back from injury and always turned the ball upfield without hesitation despite being only 180 pounds. Wish he was an assistant coach for SMU and not up in Denton.

Dickerson & Bordano.

Dickerson b/c he is one of the greatest RB's of all time and it was great to have him in a PONY uniform. Also I would have to say Bordano b/c he played while I was in school and he was amazing to watch, always giving it his all and playing with such high intensity.

With all due respect to Stangster .... Ramon Flanigan was very good when he played here, but he went six years without learning to read a defense - do we need that in our coaching staff?

When you think about all the greats at the Hilltop: Kyle Rote, Doc Hayes, Krebs, DickerJames, Hixson, Meredith, Forest Gregg, Jerry Mayes, Wayne Morris, Louie Kelture, Carey Brabham, Bordano; it gets difficult to pick one.

But, without a doubt, the greatest of them all was Doak Walker. SMU and Doak go tohether like cookies and milk.

My #2 pick would be Jerry Levias.

I've only been an SMU fan for a couple years now... but I was always a Payne Stewart fan. Other than that, I don't know, maybe Dale Hellastrae.... NEVER UNDERSESTIMATE THE DEEP SNAPPER!!! HAAA!!!
