Yeah, those last few weeks were tough. The early part of that year was promising. The S. hit the fan right after the ND game. (The Hansen thing) As I recall, we then beat T. Tech and then that miserable final game at Texas Stadium against Arkansas (wasn't it 49-0?)
Interesting remembrance (or at least I thought so): I was at a sportscaster convention in Dallas that previous August of 86 (was a sportscaster in Greenville and Tyler in a different life) Anyway, they had a roundtable forum on college athletics and the press etc.) Bob Hitch our former AD was one of the speakers. They talked about the role of the press and the SWC's outlaw image. Anyway, Hitch says something to the effect of "I am almost afraid to turn the tv on or read the newspaper. I think we all have things in our program we worry about."
Deloss Dodd, who was also on the program concurred.
Who knew what would happen later?

I feel your pain too. But those losses won't matter in the scheme of things if we improve. But if next year these losses were still happening, I'd be concerned.
Bennett's winless season was the worst of the seasons I have witnessed. This one win season (assuming a loss at Memphis) was the most disappointing because of the expectations placed on it. In hindsight, it was not fair to put winning seasons and bowl expecations on this team, or any SMU team, going forward until it actually gets done once. The athletic department has egg all over their face after the marketing campaign before and during the season. As an alumni and passionate fan of SMU, I feel let down by the school....again. The attendance during the year and at the last home game shows just how disgusted the alumni, students, and fans are with SMU. The fan attendance at the games tells it all...everyone is fed up with SMU. This team played sloppy all year. This group of underachievers quit on the season several games ago and it shows. This next coach better be a big name to get everyone excited again.

You can really blame Dement, Tubbs, and Copeland for this. Their lousy recruiting has put us in this bind and the apathy by the fans and especially the students hasn't helped ONE BIT! It will take time for Coach Doh to rebuild and you had better get used to it!
no matter who the next coach is, it is going to take time to rebuild into a consistent winner. we've all seen the program suffer for 20+ years now, you would think we should be used to it by now.
give Doherty a chance to get the freshmen acclimated, and then we'll go from there. remember his 2nd year at UNC wasn't that great.

This is undoubtedly the low point in SMU Football history.
Absolute bottom.
I was at the UCF game and there were ZERO students at the game. The attendance was pathetic overall.
I believe with the expectations of the season and the disasterous results that this season is the low point.
Fortunately we have an AD and board that get it. They know that the fan base has been destroyed. They know that fans are in a show me mode. No one will jump on board with a coach just because he is new.

Your side didn't look so hot either. Absolutely no room to talk.

You must've run in the same circles as Bill Coats then, right? UT grad who did SMU games when they were televised locally in the 80s and now sports guy at KTBB in Tyler...or at least he was through a couple years ago on the morning show. Hell maybe you are Bill Coats

Sometimes I have a really difficult time understanding people on this Board.
If given the choice of a 7-6 season, including a 34-10 loss to Troy in the New Orleans bowl, thus guaranteeing yet another year of PB and his recruiting of cast-offs...
OR
A complete capitulation of a season that leads to the funding of a real HC, the possible impetus of a Education school plus further changes to our Model...plus the hiring of a WOW coach????
You know...I might just look back on this season as THE BEST one in the past 20 years.

11,000 students. 1-9. Oh yeah, Thanksgiving break. Please, this was a family and friends affair only. No one should have expected any students. I was at Lane stadium, it was cool, the team I went to see won the game!

Very True, those November holiday games are never good for attendance
