While feeling a bit scavengerish, are there any players on Penn State's team we would want to go after, if the program is shut down.

I was working off of Dutch's premise that the school's trustees shut the program down, not the NCAA.

I continue to believe that non-profits are not setup with suitable checks and balances and no one from a college president or head football coach should keep their jobs over ten years. A large board of volunteers simply is not hands on enough to hold long-term executives accountable for their day to day actions in non-profits.

Next, Joe Pop is going to tell us that his coaching staff didn't know, his players didn't know--the locker room is a very small place--and a 28 year old graduate assistant kept his mouth shut? Joe Pop by his inaction condoned child molesting and essentially approved of his behavior for almost ten years by giving him an office on campus and allowing him to continue to interact with his players--as late as last week!

Joe Pop, I am sorry, but you are now King of Coverups!

If there is an irony to this is that it was JoePa and the football team that brought any recognition to this school which was primarily an agricultural school before he got there. What helped enable it to national prominence may also turn out to be its demise.

PSU - University Park, has very limited classes for freshman and sophomores. In fact, unless you're an athlete, you pretty much have to go to one of the local PSU campuses, first and go to the University Park campus for the last two years. Sort of like if UTA, UTEP, UTSA were all two year schools and UT -Austin was the four year school. But when a University is built by one man, who is human, it lives or dies with that one man. Alabama was lucky that Bear got out when he did on good terms. Ohio State took some time to bounce back from Woody Hayes. Michigan is still trying to recover from Bo's ignominious departure.

here's a thought:

The U.S. Department of Education will launch an investigation into whether Penn State University failed to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act) in regard to allegations of sex offenses on campus by a former school official. Former Penn State Defensive Coach Jerry Sandusky has been charged with sexually abusing several young boys over several years, including incidents on campus.

The investigation of Clery Act violations will be conducted by the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA). DOE officials formally notified Penn State of the investigation in a letter today. As the FSA investigation proceeds, the Office for Civil Rights will also assess whether further investigations or enforcement actions are warranted.

the penalties?
The Clery Act requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses. Compliance is monitored by the United States Department of Education, which can impose civil penalties, up to $27,500 per violation, against institutions for each infraction and can suspend institutions from participating in federal student financial aid programs.

if this mushrooms into a much bigger scandal than it already is, could one envision the enforcement penalties to the institution to be so severe that some kind of negotiated compromise to curtail the football program to any degree might be incorporated in any settlement?

This summarizes my position on the NCAA's involvement: "Just because no language exists in the NCAA bylaws about a sexual assault of a child is no reason for college sport's most powerful sanctioning body not to act. " "Because the Death Penalty will never again be levied at a program, about the most damaging penalty the NCAA can hand down is a reduction in scholarships and limiting Nittany Lion TV appearances. Just doesn't sound appropriate does it?...In reality, no action the NCAA can take would be appropriate, but it would be wrong if it did nothing."

Nice to know we were the guinea pig on the DP.

We were not the guinea pig. Kentucky Basketball was. It has been used before SMU and since.
SMU is just the only football program to receive it.

I stand corrected on the DP. I don't think it will be levied again on a D1 program though.

1) The University of Kentucky basketball program for the 1952-53 season.
2) The basketball program at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) for the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons
3) The Southern Methodist University football program for the 1987 and 1988 seasons.
4) The Division II men's soccer program at Morehouse College for the 2004 and 2005 seasons.
5) The Division III men's tennis program at MacMurray College for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.

On a far more serious note, did I just hear that the interim coach (defensive coordinator) also knew about the 2002 "rape" for the past decade? I hope I was wrong, but I thought he was quoted in his first press conference that he was also aware of the problem. Again, I hope I am wrong. Like a number of you, I feel so bad about this story I have to express myself on this board...sorry.
