I think what Mex is saying is that at no time in SMU's history would we have 4 bowls in 4 years even if they were handing Bowl bids out to .500 teams back in the old days.
Not sure if that would be correct, me thinks we had more that 4 in a row in early 80's but of course we were in eligible some years.
Can't wait for Hawaii Bowl!

We weren't in cusa in that era either. CUSA, who was ranked below a FCS conference this year

I thought he might have meant that PonyKris, but he would have been wrong on that count as well.
SMU teams from the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's, 1950's and 1980's would all have been involved in 4-straight bowl games using Mex's criteria.
Just don't understand why he is spewing such negativity about our school, he should know better. There are plenty of younger alumni who think SMU's glory days only involved cheating from the '80's and they would be wrong.
From 1920-1986, SMU had a higher winning % than A&M, Rice, Baylor, TCU and Texas Tech. Only Arkansas and UT were more successful programs than SMU from the old SWC days.

Yes he is available but rumor has it he is going to the Miami Dolphins since many of his friends swim with the fishes.

Look, SMU's all-time winning record is below .500; it is .482.
In 94 years of football, we have won only 11 conference championships ( I don't count joint or co champions of a division of a conference). That's basically one per decade!
The so-called Golden Years, were 1935-1949, a record of .654.
The rest? Hayden Fry .427; Dave Smith, .515; Ron Myer .515; only Bobby Collilns had a record above .700 in the history of SMU and we know what hand he was dealt.
I agree, June needs to hire some assistants that can recruit--I feel I almost led that bandwagon three years ago on this issue. But you don't fire a coach that wants to leave--basically they all do. Schools aren't loyal to them and visa versa. You need to find out the "why"! Why did he want to leave? These are the same issues that will prevent you from hiring a new coach--and certainly an experienced coach that has the savy and contacts in the profession to know when he can't succeed.
All I am trying to say, is put things in perspective. It is difficult to win at SMU not matter who coaches and who is president of the school. I remember the same discussion about Rossley, and as a student Hayden Fry--probably the two best SMU coaches in my lifetime (as it turned out).

So much for him not being on anyone's short list.

Thanks Mex, that is a better response.
But for the record, SMU's all-time winning record was 55% prior to the DP and 48% today.
And teams from the 1920's, 1930's, 1940's, 1950's and 1980's would all have participated in 4 straight bowl games if .500 play was the criteria.

There weren't near as many teams, and bowls back then.

Berkeley got a good coach. Of the non-BCS coaches to get a BCS job in the last year, Dykes was my second favorite, only behind Sumlin.

No, that is just what you wanted to hear as a hard core June Jones supporter. The last part was his opinion and not necessarily truth. But if it is what you want to believe then it is what you want to hear but it doesn't mean he gets it or that it is truth.

Compared to schools that are expected to play for a national championship every year. Alabama, LSU, OU, UT etc... SMU is tough but what school isn't?
