SMU increased travel expensed in going to the west coast in the MWC. So it would be about the same travel expense as MWC except more money in the BE. Especially the way the BE divisions are split up now. No way SMU should go to the MWC.

I dont see any benefit of MWC. Its better than CUSA by a small margin. Right now what we got in the nBE is the ONLY option we have. It sucks. The thought of travelling sucks. The only way I see not bothering with MWC is if the expense outweight the TV revenue. Aresco knows if he doesnt get the gold mine deal, there wont be a BE conference. I was really kind of hoping that people would pick apart the ACC. That would knock out that TV deal, form a new conference with BE and maybe we would be a part of it. There is really nothing we can do other than put all of our hopes into Aresco. If he fails, so was this "upgrade" we thought we were getting last year.

The Big East has always been a basketball league and it looks like that is not going to change. SMU will see a better tv deal but NBE will still be about BBall. I am so glad we have Larry Brown.

Big east will wind up with Xavier butler etc and be a hoops conf. Football for us will wind up in a conf made of nBe, bigxii schools that don't go to pac or b1g (ie not the Texas teams or Kansas), and the acc leftovers if there are any (wake for example, maybe nc st)

Call me naive, but I believe a pretty good contract will be executed. Why? First, there is not enough product out there to satisfy all the programing needs of cable. Second, the needs of the Big East and major providers are somewhat aligned. Should the Big East and ACC fall into irrelevance, ESPN's dominance of college football will be so great that no other provider can reasonably compete. When that happens, it is not just the bowls controlled by ESPN, but conference alignments, and quite frankly who wins and who loses. NBC and Fox have too much at stake to allow only one sports provider total domination.

Mexmustang, what do you mean when you say:

If that were the case, the MWC would be the conference representing the non automatic conferences year in and year out. I don't see Boise and SDS staying for such a small revenue increase when they can make the BCS every year, stay close to home, and maintain their current rivalries. Quite frankly, I don't even know if it is still worth it for us to go to the Big East anymore and we are desperate.
As I said then, this is the best we can hope for at this point... Best of the rest every year in football which gives us access to the BCS. Get BYU and maybe Gonzaga and the basketball is at least respectable. If you think the Big East will survive this you are smoking crack. So our other option is to pay $5 million to the big east beg conf USA and return to an even more watered down conf. Hopefully we were at least smart enough to already have things in place with MWC over the last 4 weeks.

The Big East initially sought $300 million annually for its combined rights fees from ESPN during an exclusive negotiating period in the fall, CBSSports.com has learned.

A bit ambitious?

I'm sorry but you have to be smoking crack to think the MWC is the best option. They are a group of (excluding Boise state) future FCS team. Committing to MWC is committing to be a 200k tv revenue FCS school. Boise got a huge chunk of the tv revenue to be swayed to come back. Big east has a chance and they still have an AQ spot next year... Ill agree that we are in a crap position but sitting here not paying fines till something comes up is by far the best choice we have.

No kiddin'-this is actually somewhat positive news portrayed in a negative light by CBS with a vested interest in the MWC. If we could get 4-6 Million-it could be worse-that's more than the MWC-plus its unlikely to be split 14 or 15 ways as suggested. 6 Million would be pretty damn good under the circumstances.

Hard to believe at one time we were thinking it was $10+ million per year........per school. Still think East is the direction to go..........
