That's one option.

They are playing UH that day.

I'm sure I'm missing others, but the only FBS options I see that day are Army and Boise State.

How do we know it was Vandy that canceled? We may have had to schedule a conference game on the week of 9/14 and our open date is a different date to schedule a FBS team. Our schedule is released at the end of January, so let's see what we end up with.

If the replacement is on a different date, then schools like Oregon State and Washington State become possibilities. Regardless, the replacement has to be an FBS school.

Oregon State perhaps but Washington State is booked. No small task finding another FBS game.

Whoever it is it should be a home game for our guys. I don't like the idea of adding another flight to the East or West coast for a makeup game.

Vanderbilt was supposed to be a road game. Does SMU want to buy an eighth home game?

If we were to land a game in Lansing, our schedule would be amazingly and challenging, especially with their new FB coach, Jonathan Smith, who will turn them around.

And, Lansing is a easy drive from Chicago. 8)

Okay, so Hawaii is now open as well, and of course we could use them to schedule a 13th game if we wanted if Hawaii came onto the schedule:

UMass also has an opening: https://fbschedules.com/army-at-umass-f ... er-report/.

Apparently there are more games being canceled due to all the conference realignment stuff so we may be keeping our options open.
