With this addition it becomes one of the most gifted brain-trusts on air ball.

not sure that translates to much if you don't have the personnel in place.

which requires some recruiting.

It sounds impressive...... but if you said we have the most gifted brain trust in single-wing football would you be impressed?

I would if we ran a single wing.

Gus Malzahn is the most gifted brain trust in single-wing football out there today, and he's doing pretty well.

The "Wildcat" is just one variation of the Single Wing

JJ could have found plenty of guys (old and young) to replace Palcic as the OL coach. While people are upset by Mumme's age (fair point), Mumme's addition is a great sign that JJ is going do something to improve the offense in GG's last year.

If you look at the changes JJ implemented to take advantage of GG's running ability last year and the addition of Mumme to the offense, it appears clear that SMU will be doing one of two things next year:
1) SMU will add more "spread" concepts like the read/option to the existing RnS offense;
2) SMU will change from the RnS to more of a modern Spread Offense such as the Air Raid.

Either would be fine with me.

JJ came to SMU with the reputation that his offenses do nothing but throw the ball. Shawnbrey McNeal shows up and suddenly JJ's offense includes a heavy does of the run, a ration that grew with the revelation that Zach Line is a serious badass. Next thing we know, JJ started using bigger receivers as tight ends (Brad Haynes, Austin Fuller) and let Garrett Gilbert run, and even designed plays for him to tuck the ball and take off. If Mumme is brought on board, it seems to be an indication that JJ, stubborn as he is, might more willing to adjust than we give him credit for ... certainly more flexible than I was willing to admit. At first, the Mumme talk was a head scratcher, but the more I think about it, the more I'm coming around.

F me. Let June's contract expire then hire Jay Norvell as HC a guy who can actually recruit and has a fire in his belly. Keep Mason on staff. Bunch of old farts who are contempt with life is what our offensive staff is.
