Hal Mumme to SMU?

Post by PonyPride »

This would be an interesting development, if true...

Hal Mumme reportedly headed to SMU as OC
Posted by Ben Kercheval on February 22, 2013, 11:20 PM EST

Last month, former Kentucky coach Hal Mumme was reportedly on the verge of becoming the offensive coordinator for James Madison. Those plans were scrapped, however, when rumor had it that Mumme was instead headed to a BCS program.

Per Mike Barber of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, that BCS program is SMU (the Mustangs will be joining the Big East this year) and Run and Shoot guru June Jones. The school has not commented on the report.

Original report was from Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch's Mike Barber (via Twitter):

So Hal Mumme is going to be the offensive coordinator at SMU, I'm told. That is why he turned down JMU job.

No word yet from SMU about the report.

This actually is exciting. This offense needs some spark.

Well, I'd love a recruiting coach, but for Hal Mumme, I'd make an allowance. The guy who taught Leach. Just don't let him have any say over the defense. He cares less about d than JJ. JJ giving up control though? Hard to believe

Sounds to me like Jones might be soon announcing his retirement to be effective at the end of the season, and this is a way to have a new staff in place for continuity.

Or he's been dead for awhile now, and in the meantime we've been propping him up like Bernie.

This move puzzles me. I can't believe June Jones would give up play calling and Hal Mumme is an Air Raid guy, not a run and shoot guy. Does this mean we are going to the Air Raid as opposed to the run and shoot?

Great article GiddyUp!!! I see this as an importunity for two great minds to mesh two passing offensive concepts together making a very sophisticated system that is easier to execute than the current R&S system. This to me is very exciting. It has to be for anyone who loves football strategy evolution. I hope this opportunity does not go without producing abundant fruits. I give JJ a high five on this decision.

One of two possibilities:

1. Opening up the offense has convinced June that he needs to modernize so he brought in another old buddy he respects to help him, or

2. The offense opened up because June was stripped of play calling by the AD because they offense was so pathetic. Phillips called the last couple games and this year an offensive coordinator is being forced on June for his last year.

Very interesting and educational read. The thread is dated back in 2009 and talks a little about our young QB "the gunslinger".

Interesting quote " I think the biggest drawback with the R&S these days is that the reads are cloudier nowadays. That isn't a killer because guys like June Jones who know that offense inside and out can coach it, but the learning curve is steeper. That's why teams can buy the system and turn things around in a season. They still have a lot to learn but once you teach the basic routes and ideas you're 70% of the way there. (The last 30 is always the toughest part.)
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
