Agree- I graduated from SMU and am an avid fan. I am also a fan of Ohio St. because I grew up in Ohio and as a kid knew Woody Hayes as well as Miami (O.) since it was my parents alma mater.
thanks for supporting our school. Hope your son makes it to SMU when he is old enough.

One can't put all the blame on the students. There's an entire side of the stadium filled with alumni, and I fail to see or hear much coming from them. Cheerleaders are on that side for half the game trying to get fans to join them in cheering. When the band plays 'Peruna' or 'Pony Battle', the alumni could clap along. Yes, it is kinda corky, but it's participating. The alumni could learn 'Beans' and dance along with the students and band members. Everyone know the Florida State tomahawk move. Why can't 'Beans' be the SMU equivalent (with an appropriate name change, of course). Put away the cell phones, stop chatting to your neighbors, and get involved in the game. Has it ever occurred to you that the students are simply mimicking the alumni?

Its been the trend for 20 yrs regardless of the score and I am not sure that will change. The Home side needs work, its like zombies watching a fball game..

I love that song, and participate along with it.

Like others have said the student section wasn't bad. They were the only people other than the Texas Tech players that really got behind the white-out, and who can blame them for not sticking around for a team that's constantly disappointed them in recent years. Aggie and Longhorn students haven't exactly been very supportive when their teams have had losing seasons, so I'm sure our students would step up their game if our team takes it to another level which we all hope for.

The bad thing about the white out is Tech was wearing white and on the TV, our student section looked like Tech fans.

Speaking of the white out - I was very surprised to see the Peruna handlers wearing blue shirts! I have seen them wearing white at times in the past, so it's not like it wasn't an option for them.

Anyone see the white towels? I don't remember seeing them.

I got one and was hit in the face several times by the little kid in front of me swinging his. I told him to keep on swinging and I would worry about ducking.
Saw the students twirling them also.

Saw a woman, (looked like the sit down lady) in a private box, twirling her "white" tassels. Would have preferred it if she hadn't. Easy to see.....hard to get out of one's memory.

I'm an alumnus who lives far away and only makes it to games infrequently... I noticed the comment about "Beans" and I'm wondering whether that's the cute little dance jig the students do, raising their hands and shuffling sideways? I don't know what it is about the routine that entertains me - it's probably that we didn't do it when I was at SMU and I envy them as being in their college years - but I enjoy it immensely when they do it. Seems fun.

I've gotta laugh at myself, of course I just googled "Beans" and SMU after my last post, and there it is! Now I have something to smile and watch (and waste even more time on)! It makes me feel happy for the students, they look like they are having fun (even though I wish there were more of 'em!).

there seems to have been slow and steady improvement with student attendance during the June Jones era. Our alumni problem is every bit what our student problem is...if not more so. The 90's were absolutely horrible but this goes back as far as I can remember. My freshman roommate was a Notre Dame fan (who wasn't accepted there and "fell back" on SMU). He needed to be encouraged to attend our games when he was in school and I doubt he has attended a game since the death penalty (about the time I moved away from Dallas). Bottom line is that disinterested students become even more disinterested alumni.
I'm sure you all know several fellow alumni who do nothing to support their school. Let's hope some success at Moody under coach Brown will bring back some bandwagon alumni who at least attended games as students. Hopefully they will get excited about SMU athletics and even decide to visit Ford at some point in the future.

Thank so much for this hint. I hadn't seen the Hawaii video - that was my son in front! My other son and I always dance along, too!
