Quarterbacks

Post by giacfsp »

Should be an interesting stretch run up to the season. Today's DMN said Coach Bennett sees the QB race as even. I just hope they all play well enough that Coach Bennett and Coach Burns have a hell of a time making a decision, and so well that they all make each other raise their level of play a notch.

what happened to coach b naming his starter for fall coming out of the spring practice?? BTW, this is a very good move...if it is not for window dressing.

Do you think we will end up switching qb's a lot in a game? I am not a big fan of that, hope they pick a qb, he is the right choice and they stick it out.

Based on past observation, Bennett makes a decision on personnel coming out of camp and he sticks with it. It will be interesting to see what happens with the QB, since it has been such a ? the last couple of years. With two being even, yet with different styles it will make an interesting story considering our September schedule.

I don't think we will be switching QBs during the game much. I think the coaches have to be dissappointed in the passing game from the scrimmage. Remember, Eckart lit up the spring game, but it was against a 4-3 playing a spread offense. I suspect that the low numbers during the first scrimmage indicate that we are, indeed, playing nickel and dime packages, and testing Lindley, Jones, and Haynes to see who wants to be those nickel and dime backs.

Our current receiving core is not the best, and the fact that Rushbrook got a lot of PT in the scrimmage indicates that Pellerin, Lowery, Chase, Warren, Taylor, etc. have not beat him out for a starting spot. That is not a good sign. Rushbrook plays with a lot of heart, but is small, gets bumped around a lot off of his routes, and is not a great D-1 receiver.

Because our CBs are getting better and our Receivers are still a weak spot, it is going to be very hard for the ponies to rely on a pure drop back passer. Which is probably why Eckert has struggled. He is the one guy who will try to rifle a ball in rather than take off and run.

All of these reasons are probably why Romo has worked his way back into the competition, wheras in the spring he was definately number 3 on the depth chart. He is more mobile than Eckert and more experienced and accurate than Phillips.

I talked to a friend in Dallas who said that the coaches might be open to a "change of pace" by using more than one QB. Not sure where he heard/read that, though. Personally, I'd rather see one guy.

After a winless season and with a young team, the fact that virtually all positions are up for grabs is a great motivator. Competition makes the stronger candidates better.
