End of half clock mgmt

Post by gostangs »

Anybody else question the clock mgmt at the end of the first half - seems like we let 45 seconds click off, while we had a time out, just to throw a pass with no time left well short of the end zone. No dig on Phillips - I think it was the coaches call.

We go for a couple of quick outs in a hurry up with a time out to burn if someone does not get out of bounds, and it seems we have a good shot at getting the ten yards you need for a 40-45 yard kick -

Am I missing anything?

Also I liked Phillips athleticism but there were clock problems all night long.

Agreed. If we used our last timeout with 10-12 seconds left, Phillips could take a shot at the end zone and still have a chance for a long FG or another deep pass if it didn't work.

Overall, the coaching is much better, but I would have liked to see that handled better.

I'm pretty sure it was already 4th down at that point. We were letting the clock run so Tech wouldn't get the ball back if we didn't convert.

Then why not run it to 2 seconds, and give our guy a shot at a 50 yarder? I know it was not likely, but better then throwing short with no time left.

And the two plays prior were not hurry up at all - there was no attempt to hustle to give it a shot.

Wasn't that the INT play?

First I couldn't believe Tech didn't call timeout to force our hand. We would have had to go for it and risk good field position for them with some time left or punted.

Then I couldn't believe we didn't call timeout and throw it to the endzone after Tech gave us the chance. Instead we ran a play that gave us no chance to score but did have some risk, as shown by the result.

Good thread. I had forgotten about that.

Actually, it was third down. So we could have thrown one into the end zone (Phillips has a strong enough arm). If that didn't work, we could have (A) tried again or (B) gone for a 50-yarder. McMurtray has the leg strength. Would have been worth a shot.

end of half clock management

Listen to Bennett's game review. The last minute of the half does not have a 30 second rule for getting the play off. Phillips missed it and it sounds like the SMU staff missed it too.
