The Wiz/Bullets introduced to Texas basketball

Post by LA_Mustang »

I know this has nothing to do with SMU but the Mavs deserve some serious props. When was the last time a team scored 137 in regulation in the NBA? Not since the days of Alex English and the 80’s Denver Nuggets?? A so-called "power" in the East comes into Texas with a 22-14 record and gets blown out by SA last night and the Mavs drop 137 on them tonight.....gezzz. I watch a lot of basketball but I have never seen an offensive display like the Mavs put on tonight. That was quite a statement. I believe the two best basketball teams around play in the great state of Texas- #1 SA Spurs and #2 Dallas Mavs.

BTW, I loved the old school uniforms......the Bullets looked great.

You liked that orange look? Ugh. They looked like Syracuse .... and tonight they were only slightly better. The other orange college team (no, not the wannabes in Austin or Stillwater -- I mean Illinois) might have beaten the Wiz tonight. They were horrible.

The Wizards scored 120 without their leading scorer. The Wizards have laid an egg since Hughes got hurt. Arenas, Hughes and Jamison were really starting to gel. Oh well, they haven't been any good since Elvin Hayes and Wes Unseld retired. And by the way just for trivia sake, they wore Orange when they were the Baltimore Bullets. They switched to red white and blue when the moved to Washington and then changed to the blue, white and copper since they renamed themselves the "Wizards". Their star players in the Charm City were Earl the Pearl Monroe and Gus (Backboard Breaker) Johnson.

The only reason the Wiz scored 120 was because the Mavs basically quit playing d in the 4th. They actually played pretty good defense in the first three quarters. Josh Howard is the difference maker. The Mavs are an elite team with him healthy and on the floor.

DD, I loved that they had "Bullets" on their jerseys. The orange was kinda ugly. I like the red, white and blue Bullet uniforms much better.

The score didn't tell the story on this one. We were up 30 during the 2nd/3rd quarter.
By the way....gotta love those headbands, especially on Dirk

The Mavs quit playing D in the late 90's...

Actually, the Mavs quit playing D back the early 90s, when the team went completely down the can. Then again, it's hard to play D when you have no talent.

With all due respect to the Karl Malone fans out there, the Big E was the most unstoppable power forward in the history of the game, and maybe the best ever to play the position. And with all due respect to the Charles Barkley fans out there, there's never been a 6'4" inside guy like the great Wes Unseld. (And don't forget Greg Ballard -- slow fat guy with the sweetest jumper .... but I digress.)

And the Wiz didn't score 80 after halftime the other day because the Mavs stopped playing defense. They scored because they started hitting shots. Dallas didn't play any defense in the first half, either -- Washington just wasn't making shots. In the second half, they were on fire. (How far was Jarvis Hayes's last 3 -- mid-court? Kid has sick range.)

Whatever the reasons .... Mavs still won.

I totally disagree. The Wizards were missing shots because the Mavs were running at the shooters. Give the Mavs a little credit, they are respectable defensively when Damp, Howard and JET are on the floor.

I'm a HUGE Howard fan. With his long arms, athletic ability and toughness, he's a special player (there's a lot of Scottie Pippen in his game).....I cant believe he dropped that far in the draft. The Nelsons deserve a lot of credit for that pick.

I'll give you Josh Howard. Great defender. The rest of them couldn't guard you and me. Actually, maybe they could, they just don't.

And I like your Pippen comparison (although he's not yet the outside shooter Pippen was, but that will come.) Dirk's the best (best player in team history?), but Howard's going to be terrific, too.
