SMU, North Texas agree to two-year series

Post by Webmaster »

From the SMU athletic department:

SMU & UNT Agree To Home-And-Home Series
Tuesday, February 8, 2005

DALLAS (SMU) - SMU and North Texas have signed an agreement for a home-and-home football series beginning with the 2006 season, SMU Athletic Director Jim Copeland announced today. The set will begin when SMU travels to Denton for a game on Sept. 9, 2006, and will conclude with a Sept. 8, 2007 game at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas.

"We’re very excited to add North Texas to our schedule," said Copeland. "In keeping with our goal of playing regional rivals or old Southwest Conference schools as our non-conference games, we feel this is a rivalry that will be good for the Metroplex. Along with our move to Conference USA next season, this game is just another step towards our goal of providing a challenging, fan-friendly schedule."

SMU will open its 2005 season Saturday, Sept. 3, when SMU hosts old SWC rival, Baylor, at Ford Stadium. SMU then hosts TCU on Sept. 10 before traveling to College Station to face Texas A&M on Sept. 17. Due to television scheduling, the Conference USA portion of the slate will not be available until later this month.

For tickets to all SMU events, please call the SMU Ticket Office at 214-SMU-GAME.
"It’s hard to overstate how impressive SMU has been on the recruiting trail since the ACC announced the Mustangs would be joining the league”

2006
SMU Texas Tech
SMU At Northwestern
Wake Forest At SMU
NOW -- SMU at North Texas

2007
Northwestern At SMU
At TCU
SMU At Wake Forest
NOW-- North Texas at SMU

my hope would be Wake Forest. I don't see much reason to play them in football. They have pretty good teams from time to time too, so its not like we are finding a sure win. I would rather schedule Duke than Wake, we'd have a better chance at competing.

Wasn't there some talk about everyone going to 12 games every year? Perhaps that is what is creating an opening for UNT. :? Or perhaps because of leap year or some such thing, there are two years in a row with 12 game schedules...just possible explanations.

If we have to cancel one, it will be interesting. I don't know if the home and home basketball series with Wake had a football quid pro quo element to it. Also, Copeland is an old ACC guy and might not like to cancel on his old buddies and Northwestern might just be easier for him to break. That would be ashame because don't we have a ton of alums in the greater Chicago area and I'm sure the development office would love to have a game in that area. On the other hand 2007 might be a perfect time to jettison the Horned Frogs.

Don't be stupid. We have been playing the Froggies for over 80 years. There is no reason to end that association.

It would be funny if we were taking out TCU, (more increased $ for them) but I think it is Northwestern. Too bad - I wanted an excuse for a Chicago trip.

Instead of a fun win in Chicago I get a trip up 35 to meangreens armpit, where we see how really worked up a bunch of commuting junior college students can get. At least we still get the win.

Smack aside, this makes total sense and I am glad we are doing it. The last people we should be afraid of are these chickenhawks.

There was some talk of going to a permanent 12 game schedule, but last I heard it was still in discussions. Also, we just had back to back 12 game years and I don't think the next one comes around for a while. It's too bad, I'll take any excuse to make football season longer. I still wish we could have put TCU on the schedule for 2006, but at this point I think that's a long shot at best.

Drop Northwestern AND Wake as far as I'm concerned. We are better off playing UNT and TCU every year and filling the 3rd (and 4th games when allowed) with Baylor, TTech, Army, Navy or even Kansas or La Tech before we go scheduling ACC or Big 10 teams. If and when SMU can compete with Top 25 programs, then we can start talking about venturing out of the neighborhood, but for home games...bring someone in here that can help us fill the stadium.

The only things I like about NTSU are Darrell Dickey and Ramon Flanigan. However, with that said, I still think this is long overdue. Here's to the beginning of a long, healthy rivalry.

This is a series that never should have been interrupted in the first place. The rivalry is just too natural to NOT play this game.

Quote from Calvin Watkins:

SMU officials are seeking more regionally based nonconference teams to play. Boston College, Northwestern and Wake Forest have been dropped from future SMU schedules. Oklahoma State was eliminated last year to make way for UNT.

I, for one, was extremely dissapointed when SMU canceled the BC game (as my high school buddy went to BC, thus it was to be a great oppurtunity to take in his campus in the proper atmosphere). I'm now supremely dissapointed about canceling Northwestern, as in this case, a bunch of SMU buddies formed a theater company in Chi-town.

Wake? Ehh... whatever...

Well, c'est la vie... let's just hope we play UT again soon. (Maybe I shouldn't hope that it's to soon, because... yeah, I'd like to win that game.)
