Saturday's scrimmage

Post by SWC2010 »

Did anybody get to this morning's scrimmage? How did it go? Any injuries?

Just the ordinary bumps and bruises, I think. Nobody had to be helped off or anything. Martin Guidry went down and came off the field, but he was back in a minute or two.

My impression this morning was that we look bigger and faster, pretty much across the board … Guidry looks a lot stronger. Justin Rogers looks like he's twice as big as last year, and he certainly didn't show any lingering effects from the foot/ankle that shelved him at the end of last year … Kendall Mouton looks strong, and Brandon Bonds is quicker than he's been since he got to SMU … The offensive line looked strong, except for one drive when they had first and goal from the 7 or so, and didn't push it in … Joey Sturdivant had a number of big hits, including one when he absolutely planted Jessie Henderson coming through the middle -- but then he got faked out of his shoes on the next play by Rey Pellerin (who does, as Chuck Faucette said in that strength story, look a heck of a lot stronger than he did last year) … Eckert and Romo looked pretty good. As you would expect, Romo ran a little more than Eckert … Jay'Mond Cleveland got behind the defense for a long TD catch, and Bobby Chase looked like he hasn't missed a beat since last year -- he caught everything near him (although they didn't throw a whole lot to him) … Henderson is strong for a little guy -- he ran inside quite a bit, and bounced off a couple of tacklers before heading upfield … D.D. Lee was flying around, and didn't look like he was favoring his arm (injured in 2004) at all … Wilton McCray might have been the best defensive player out there. He was everywhere … Ben Poynter looks very comfortable at center. No dropped snaps, that I saw, and on several occasions he got up and pulled toward the sideline with a lot of hustle, getting there in time to knock down a defensive player and look for another … Cedrick Dorsey ran strong … Fred Turner showed his wheels, turning the corner on one pitch and racing into the end zone.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Talked to a guy who was there today & said the most noticeable was the across the board bigger size of the team versus the '04 team. Both O & D were sharper than last. Thought the scrimmage was physical with some pretty good hits by the D.

On offense, Bobby Chase catches everything thing you throw to him. Eckert & Romo did well with the nod going to Romo. RB's were good for the most part, with RSFr DeMyron Martin more consistent in 'moving the pile' on each play he got the ball.

No major injuries.

Thanks for the report! How did Victor and Goode look at the safety spot?

I thought DeMyron Martin was very impressive.
And I was glad to see D.D. Lee playing so hard. He made a lot of plays for the defense.
Chris McMurtray's leg seems even stronger. He really cranked a couple of field goals.
Randall Goode and Jamey Harper looked very solid at the safety spots.

Overall, the size and speed seems much better.

I thought the scrimmage was supposed to be closed! If I'd known you could get in, I would have been there.

Anybody else see the practice? How about you, Stallion. You usually voice your opinion on these matters. Were you there?

Scrimmage

Henderson was the one who scored a TD around the corner. He is #9 while Turner is #1. It was a good day for the RB's for sure.
