Are we gonna win this fall!!!

Post by TheFinalWord »

Greetings! My first time on PonyFans.com, I like it already. I like the enthusiasm and positive attitude, unlike that other site...

I need to know from those who see practice (since I am out of town, but plan on being there Sat for scrimmage) if we are just in the same Spring excitement, or if things are REALLY improved.

I for one think Bennett was a great hire, perhaps we were even leaning on Waters, but did the requisite interviewing and found him as a Gift from the Football gods.

Now, if we can just get, say, a Top30 recruiting class to start the momentum, and edge into a Top20 class, we will be on our way.

BTW, TCU sent 8 people to the pros last year and that class wan unheralded...good coaching can make a difference.

Yes, here is why:

These coaches are setting out to eliminate the mistakes that we have constantly made. There are repercussions when a mistake is made, be it a fumble or missed assignment.
The coaches are teaching the players to strive for perfection and go above the call of duty. For instance, DB's are not taught to swat down balls, they are EXPECTED to intercept the ball.
The schemes and packages that have been presented to the players are more basic, fundamental, efficient, and most importantly effective. Cavan et al I think figured if we don't have the most talent in the nation we can outsmart or use confusing and complex schemes and to win games. Well, this obviously did not work.
These coaches are set on winning. Cavan was set on not losing. There is a difference there.
Players are being put in positions where they should be, not where they can be. While I am talking about positions, Kris Briggs is a fullback. At the scrimmage on Thursday, he looked pretty darn good.

I would say to everyone: Bennett is saying he came to win and will win. I say do not expect to win a WAC championship next season or do not expect to win 9 games. Give him time to build his team. But I will say, do not be surprised if we win a WAC championship because Bennett seems to be a guy that will keep his word and seems to know what he is doing.

PonyTalk,

Your report is like a breath of fresh air !! I am so excited about Coach Bennett and his assistant coaches! Give Coach Bennett time - this program will turn around.

So many times last season, SMU was so close to a W, but then mistakes lost the game. NOT THIS YEAR! It is going to be a great season. My hat is off to the football players - as I understand from the posts, they are working like never before!!

SMU will win the WAC by 2004, if not sooner. Coach Bennett is that good, as a coach and as a recruiter.

I like BennettBacker's confidence - especially in the "if not sooner" part!
