Hats off to your team and your fans!

Post by Huffnagel »

There is no doubt that your team gave every effort they had to win that football game, and the SMU fans that attended the game were loud in cheering for their team until the very end.

I met and talked with several of the SMU fans, and every single one was nice and courteous, and represented your school well. This is new to us as Marshall fans, because we are not used to the type of fans that we are being introduced to in our new conference.

I hope all of your fans had a safe return, and I hope to make the trip to SMU one day myself.

Have they determined whether it was an SMU or Marshall fan that blew the whistle on the pass to Chase? They said they kicked him or her out of the stadium but not for whom he or she was cheering.

SMU fans are about the most courteous in college sports. That may be part of the problem. We are too nice. I don't thnk I have ever heard one of our fans boo an SMU player, not that I condone that type of behavior but it does occur at other schools. We are a very good group--almost passive. I don't know if we are nice or just plain worn out by all the losing and therfore too tired to fight.

I guess we get the C-USA congeniality award this year again. We got it every year in the WAC.

Oh please, don't be an a$$clown. You're in high school right? What on earth gives you the idea that it's ok for you to go out there and boo a team of players that are already getting beaten up physically?

And don't tell me "Im booing Bennett and Copeland, not the players" because they don't know that. If you want to complain, go through the proper channels, write Dr Turner, discuss not renewing season tickets, etc, but don't boo the players, that's completely classless.

What else do you expect to happen?

Several others have already done the things you have stated to do, but hell it hasn't helped at all.

Im tired of losing, and I know you are to. So what are we going to do about it? Just keep writing letters?

By what I have read on the HERD boards, it was actually a Marshall fan that was whistling. The poster from HerdFans.com stated the he heard the whistle and turned around to see a Marshall guy with his hands actually doing the whislting without the use of an external device, just his mouth.

As far as the booing of players, I personally think that is pretty low of a fan. I do not understand how a fan can boo a player that is out there giving it all he has to the best of his ability. It embarrasses me as a HERD fan to hear my fellow fans boo one of our players! I just don't understand it?

Booing is NOT the answer...realize that they are not going to get a new coach in here before the end of the season, and we are most likely stuck with Bennett for now. Booing won't change this, it will only [deleted] off the fans that are trying to be FANS, and will make it ok to bash the players who are stuck in a very crappy situation. Those players out there chose SMU as the place they wanted to play, knowing that the situation was pretty bad. They are the ones who are most affected by the losses, after putting their bodies on the line. Let's not dogpile on them just because we don't like the playcalling or the lack of conditioning. Most of them weren't highly recruited, don't think we can "boo" them into becoming better players, instead we should motivate them to give it their all no matter what.

If you want changes, it's going to come down to:
1) letting those in charge know that we are unhappy. write letters, call, etc., they're not going to make personnel decisions based off of how many boos we have.
2) put your money where your mouth is. If you want changes, a lot of it will come down to money. Buying out Bennett's contract will put SMU in the hole big time, and without any financial support we're going to be scraping the bottom of the head coach barrel.

If the Marshall players had a problem with one whistle they better never go to NFL Europe where whistling is actively encouraged. Having watched these games, every fan is the stands seems to have one!

Thank you, Huffnagel, for the kind things you said about the SMU fans who attended the game in WV. I, for one, appreciate your comments.

I want someone out there to tell me why in the world our huge tight-end isnt's used as he should be. He's an awsome target but doesn't see many passes.

Would you be referring to Mr. Kennedy? If so, that's a damn good question.
