Post by Stallion »

geez did you see that UAB-a CUSA contender drew 10,000 for its game against Rice yesterday-we should feel right at home.

Probably 3/4 of the state of Alabama was in Tuscaloosa to see the Crimson Tide defeat the Univ. of Florida, 31-3. And a lot of folks in Alabama probably aren't thinking too much about football after what happened during Hurricane Katrina.

I may be wrong but I think UAB has historically had about the lowest average attendance of any CUSA football program. I can recall watching a few televised games the past couple years where they drew no more than 15,000. Another problem is that like Rice, they play in a stadium with a far greater seating capactity than they will ever need...so it looks even worse. Anyone remember our nationally televised game against Fresno in the Cotton Bowl that drew something like 8600?

Glutton for punishment that I am, I'm kicking the idea around of being there. I have to travel anyway next weekend, and it wouldn't be overly expensive to route myself through Bham.

Someone talk me out of this.

Oh, go ahead. Do it. If you're over there anyway, why not?

Are you out of your fricking mind? If it costs a dime, its too expensive, not to mention the emotional toll of having to watch this team "play" football. You'd be much happier taking a side trip to Savannah or some place nice like that.

UAB Attendance

Post by UAB Band Dad »

While our attendance is sometimes not that large, I'll offer this up by way of explanation of last weekend - UA was playing UF (and both ranked, first time in forever for the Tide), AU was playing, and Talladega was running at the same time. That's a lot of competition. Traditionally we get a lot of walkup ticket sales, and that didn't happen.

Also, not to throw brickbats, but it was Rice. Hard to get that excited about them, conference game or not. This weekend will be better, I'm expecting 20 to 22k at a guess. Homecoming, after all...

As to Legion Field, yeah, we play in a 70,000 seat stadium so it always looks empty. Also, when you see us on TV, the cameras are all set up on the home side, which is higher and has the pressbox. The cameras are always showing the visiting side, which makes things look worse than it is.

I'm looking forward to seeing y'all. I'm an old SWC fan and remember well the salad days of SMU, pre death penalty. I'm hoping to see you grow with the new conference, I think we have the makings of a very solid conference here across the board.

I hope you... well, "enjoy" isn't quite the word, but Hackney is a joy to watch. He's the real deal. We're going to put up a lot of throwing yards. It's his last season though, he's been tormenting Memphis forever according to their fans. He's #4 on the NCAA rankings for current QB's. I'm not going to talk a lot of smack, we'll see how the game unfolds.

Anyhow, welcome to C-USA and if any of you make it to the game wander around the tailgating. Most or our active internet posters will be wearing blazertalk.com t-shirts, look us up and we'll have a cold one together.

Do we lead the nation as homecoming opponent's of choice? We should carry our own float to these games.

I would encourage all of the Ole South "Purple Gang" to come see SMU/UAB game this week.

Come get a close view of the team that knocked you out of the BCS by 21-10.

"carrying our own floats"...now that is funny! We could even get Copeland to drive it.

I'd just like to write the same words on the side of a float that they did.
