DMN Articles

Post by Mickey »

There are two articles in the DMN today about 2 football programs going in opposite directions. The article written by Kevin Blackistone describes a school that is trying to compete at the highest level. From a salary standpoint they are really competitive. From a facilities standpoint, they are really competitive. From a budget standpoint, they are really competitive. And from a football standpoint, they are stiving to be one of the best. Their goal is to win 12 games every year.

The article written by Calvin Watkins describes a D-1(? ) program that has attracted 4,621 season ticket holders. They are expected to draw about 12,000 fans to a homecoming game today against winless Rice. Is it the weather? Hell no! According to the AD at this school, the goal for this program is to CONSISTENTLY win 5 or 6 gmes a year. That tells it all.

That is why TCU is goes bowling and SMU fires its coach every 5 years.

Recruits

Post by drummer »

Why would any high school recruit want to go to a school where their
goal was to win 5or6 games.

I guess we are going after the kids who don't want to go to a school whose goal is 3-4 wins.

I wonder how long it took for someone to email the kid from Hutto that quote?

Big Jim was probably misquoted. He might have said 5 or 6 wins every three years instead of every year. Bennett was on the high side with 6 wins and that is probbly why he got a contract extension.

This quote from Copeland is just as bad in the article:

Copeland said he is not sure what would make him happy.

"But if we play out well, I'd be pleased," he said. "I can see at times where we are better than we have been as a team. But there are other times we don't look good."'

How does he not know what he is looking for in the rest of the season? These aren't the quotes of a leader. SMU needs action from the top not indecision. Is it too much to ask for some forceful leadership from our Athletic Director?

No doubt that Copeland is just "playing out" the remainder of his career at SMU.
