SMU Loses Yet Another Legacy

Post by Stallion »

OLM John Marshall from Mount Vernon, the son of SMU Defensive Lineman David Marshall, committed to Kansas. I was really kinda surprised by how his recruiting apparently picked up as he has flown under the radar since he is not from a metro area. But Rivals reports a pretty nice collection of offers from Kansas, Iowa St., Houston, SMU, Rice, Army and Navy. Actually, the report didn't list an offer from SMU but the Player Profile page did-so its unclear.

"unclear" is a great term to use in SMU's recruitment of John Marshall. Sadly, we have let another recruit slip away because of some broken promises or at least a very vague line of communication. Early in Marshall's recruitment he would have jumped at the chance to follow in his dads footsteps. But, because of some "unclear" signals sent by the staff...excuse me...head coach in particular, SMU has lost the opportunity to get a quality offensive lineman in the fold. I guess we were waiting for a better deal to come along. Kansas was too...and they got him. I am afraid it is just going to be more of the same On the Hilltop.

David Marshall, originally from Ohio, played for Ron Meyer during an era when SMU recruited a few football players from some northern states east of the Mississippi.

Dandy, you are right. JB was ready to pull the trigger on this kid and could not get the go ahead from PB. I am afraid the same thing is going to happen with the Burley kid from Scurry Rosser. PB is not a very good at evaluating talent and does not trust his coaches to do it. I think you have figured that out though.

Philip Burley has his offer.

Really? He hasn't gotten every player he wants, to be sure -- no coach does. But he thought enough of them to offer DeMyron Martin, Bobby Chase, Vincent Chase, Justin Willis, Cory Muse, Adrian Haywood, Joe Sturdivant, etc. Should he have not recruited those guys?

I want better players, too. But that would be the case even if we had Eric Dickerson and Doak Walker out there again. I don't believe that he doesn't know how to evaluate talent -- it's (as always) a matter of getting it here.

ANY HS lineman in the USA has to be a fool not to want to go to the same school that the training table feeds the fattest FB coach in America!

He was enormous before he got there.

But you're right, they must have a good buffet at Kansas. Doesn't look like Coach Mangino has been forced to hit the salad bar lately.

What are you talking about? He hit the salad bar right as he walked in the door, and knocked it all over the place. Geez that man is huge, one would think that was Jabba the Hutt on the sidelines.
