I'm not trying to split hairs here but I did want to clear something up. The National Championship for the Ponies came in 1935 led by "The Corsicana Comet" Bobby Wilson.

Doak was on the Hilltop in 1945, and 1947-1949. We won the SWC title in 47 and 48

Rote, who Lettered in 1948-1950, was part of a great backfield with Walker but emerged as an All-American in his own right in 1950. He had his own cover on Life magazine that year, two years after Doak's famous cover.

Grider, take that one to DMN. I was only quoting the article. I claim no historical knowledge of SMU, although I would like to learn more. Thanks for clearing that up.

Fair enough, PPP. We're glad to have you on board and also, it's good to see folks that are interested in the Mustangs' storied past. It is however, a common misconception that Doak's team was the national championship team. Anyway:

Go Ponies!! Beat Navy!!
