Invite Eric Dickerson to speak at Kickoff Luncheon

Why not bring back ED in September? Get him and James.

Because he is an ungratefull, selfish piece of [deleted] is why. He would probably charge us an apperance fee and then badmouth our entire athletic program in his kickoff speech.

ED never misses a chance to get a dig in about SMU and has never done anything but further hurt our program since he left. I have never seen such an ungratefull alumni. Many people on this board have been critical of Craig James and his lack of open vocal support of SMU athletics. I too wish he was a big advocate and a selling point for SMU football, but at least you never hear him bad mouthing his school (even if he is a red raider now haha).

I would agree having ED as a football supporter would be huge for SMU Athletics, but somewhere along the lines that relationship died. Does anyone know why? I really have no clue as to why he seems to be so anti SMU. Maybe with a new AD coming in this burnt bridge can somehow be repaired.

Until then, why not a young alumni like KG who is now an NFL player. No he isn't ED and never will be, but he cares about SMU and is a recent success story from our football program. It sure would be nice to get Q Ross involved in some SMU hoops type apperances as another SMU success story. I think it would be big for kids we are recruiting to see SMU is currently pumping out pro athletes rather than having to tell them about the good ole days before they were even born anyways.

I thought he was just fed up with pathetic SMU teams year after year, like the rest of us.

I am sure if we paid ED to speak at the luncheon he would....just like we did for him to come to SMU to start with. Even Copeland said one time, "once a hired gun, always a hired guy"!

I don't think ED's criticism in public is the best method to effect change, but he doesn't say anything that isn't true. I think he. like many of us, know that most of SMU really doesn't care about winning and isn't trying, and he is fed up.

Kill him with kindness. Roll out the red carpet, celebrate his return, invite him to be more active in promoting the school. The more we say "boohoo, he's not a true ponyfan", the more he likely he is going to badmouth SMU on a national interview.

Oh no - NOT Eric Dickerson...the office I am currently working in is running around trying to get the final touches finished on the Doak Walker Award Banquet - since he IS a SMU alum we have to treat him as well as we treat past winners and its crazy. Had to call him just the other day to ask if he was coming or not(since he never replied to our RSVP) and he was just like well um...I'm kinda doing something right now. Can you call back later? How hard is it really to say Yes I'm coming, or No, I'm not. I hope he stays wherever he is cause I don't want to deal with him(or his ego) come Doak Day.

So what?

Emmitt's the same way, (pay me to show up for the Texas Hall of Fame), and everybody still loves him.

He was probably busy with some hottie, or on the can, or trying to do his taxes. Sometimes people really are busy.

If anyone reads this from the athletic department, make sure and have more seats this year. Last year's event was great. I hope to see more events like the kickoff luncheon in the future where the fans and the team can interact a little bit. A grass roots campaign "one fan at a time" can work wonders to fill the stadium. Instead of having a former athlete speak, why not have members of the board of directors and the president tell us what they are doing and will do in the future to have a winning football team.
