Horrible Season

Post by Billy Joe »

I will state the obvious. This was a horrible season for the men's basketball team. There has been absolutely no improvement since Tubbs has been the coach. A losing record and no post season appearances again. I expect the same next year unless Arthur signs. At this point, I probably stand a better chance of winning the lottery than Arthur signing with SMU. I hope Tubbs knows a good relocation company.

If it were not for the NC cupcakes, think about what the SMU record would have been. Maybe we've become the cupcake that other schools want to schedule. Look at our RPI and that tells the Tubbs story for sure.

If not for BHop's absence and Bamba Fall's and Brian Morris's injuries, what would our record have been then? The variables have to be considered both ways.

I hate these excuses. All teams have injury problems. You sound like Coach Tubbs making excuses for losing despite him being a good coach. He's gotten very good at that. He, and some people of this board, need to have a little class, stop making excuses, and just admit that there are teams (a lot of them) out there that are better than us.

I think it all begins with who we get for an AD. It has to be a NEW start in bball, and no more excuses for finishing 4-10 in conference.

Football, I believe, is on the right track. Great stadium, facilities, coach, and getting better recruits. Same needs to be done for bball, but man, it's prob'ly gonna take a while!

Guys, seriously, what did you expect?

Three new starters, read it and weep. If a football team, even a top 25 one had 60% turnover in their starters they would get spanked up and down the field and basketball is no different.

Stop trying to compare things so dissimilar as this team or last years, WAC and CUSA, Tubbs and Dement at this point.

The conferences change, teams have turnovers, coaches inherit different things.

You can call me an apologist if you wish, but try not to be outrageously unrealistic in your expectations and you won't have to be so furious all the time when they aren't met.

How many of you whiners show up to every game? How many bring your friends?? Have you seen the attendance that we have averaged over the last 15 years??? We averaged less than 3,000 announced attendance this year. Butts in the seats were probably half that! Have you seen the nonexistent recruiting budget that handicaps our coaches in recruiting? Have you seen the quality of the recruits brought in by Dement that Tubbs has been saddled with????? (When Tubbs was hired, I warned this board that it would take a few years to get this program turned given the quality of personnel that he had to work with when he got here, but most expected an instant winner! ) Have you seen the quality of our facilities???? Compare them to our competition. You can't! Enough said. The current apathetic attitude of the students and the alumni that have graduated post death penalty is quite apparent. The Frat boys and rest of the student body need to start showing up to everyone of these games to create the type of atmosphere that will make a recruit like Arthur seriously consider coming to SMU. Some of you don't give a dime to the Mustang club much less attend any games. That only makes it tougher to attract top quality coaches and players to this school. You need to join the club and start giving, AT A MEANINGFUL LEVEL, before this program will even have a chance of making a go of it! And start buying some season tickets and get your BUTTS in the seats :!:

we could have kept Dement and not buy out his contract and he would have duplicated tubbs's record. would have been cheaper to keep Dement. all the local dallas HS coaches let it be known they wanted tubbs but they don't send their best to SMU. what's up with that?
don't extend his 4 year contract until he shows some recruiting and coaching improvements.

You're absolutely right about one thing. The record would have been the same. And it wouldn't have gotten any better. Still no postseason.

To get to the next level you have to make changes, and you have to be patient.

It has been 13 years since we even sniffed the NCAA tournament...how much more patient should we have to be.

that post captures the attitude perfectly, Snob. What in the hell does the past 13 years have to do with where the current coach took over this program? Nothing. Quit taking your frustrations out on individuals who are not responsible for it.

We need a NEW stadium and a NEW attitude on the part of the student body to make the progress that will take us to the next level! How come we have all these new engineering buildings on campus, but can't seem to find a dime to spend to improve Moody? The endowment is now over $1 billion, but no one wants to finance a new basketball arena? Questions to ponder.
