SMU Football Experience?

OK, here's the deal: A good friend of mine asked about the college gameday experience for some of the Big XII campuses, so I figured I'd post the questions here to see what SMU's responses would be (I tried to give some examples that would apply to both SMU and other schools)......Lemme hear from ya!

1) What is the typical Gameday Experience? (what makes SMU different from UT, OU, A&M, TCU)

2) Any cool traditions that someone should know about? (Diamond M etc. for SMU, Masked Rider for Tech, Corp of Cadets march in, the whole stand all game thing at A&M)

3) Anything on campus that is unique? (Calatrava's wave sculpture in front of the Meadows Museum, Dallas Hall is the highest point in the county; UT would point out the Gutenburg Bible on campus, Tech would have the Southwest Collection with all the SWC records, etc., possibly the GW Bush library if it lands at SMU)

4)The College Hangouts ( Ex: The Old Green Elephant, Milo's, Eskimos Joe's in Stillwater)

5) Can't miss restaurants/ institutions? (Ex: Snuffers, Mustang Donuts)

Ozona and Campisis over Snuffers for sure.

SMU has a very fan friendly game day experience with bounce houses and stuff for the kids and the endzone complex. And there's the Boulevard which is beautiful.

FWIW, Houston has very extensive tailgating around the stadium, and the bell which counts off the points scored is probably one of the bigger traditions going back to the R&S days.

Try Heritage Hall in the northwest corner of the stadium.

1) Hot Chicks
2) Binge Drinking
3) Nice cars
4) Indifference to the athletic program

These are SMU's distinguishing features.

That's really sad if that's all you get from game day at SMU.

As for the rest of us, Flatlander:

Any good game day starts on the Boulevard. Especially at the beginning of the season, the place is packed. The setups have grown a lot since it started. Used to be just little umbrellas -- now you've got people with full tents, generators powering their satellite TV, good galore, a stray beverage or three, a few playful dogs running around (watch where you step) a football flying around here and there. Great atmosphere.

The game is in the most beautiful stadium in Texas. Win or lose (preferably win, obviously), it's a gorgeous place to watch a game. Inside, I think the most traditional events are when Peruna races from one end to the other (which used to happen after every touchdown, but now has been restricted to once per half or quarter, I believe) and the Mustang Band forming the Diamond M formation.

Post-game: students head off to parties, or to nearby bars: The Green Elephant no longer exists (although I hear it's going to re-open on Dyer, where the Home Bar is/was). Personally, I'm a big fan of Campisi's after games. Or any time, really.

You don't like hot chicks and sweet cars?

Gameday attendance would be much better if we did not have to follow all of HP's regulations.

I didn't say anything about what I do or don't like. All I said was that it's sad if that's all that stands out to you about game day.

And we don't have to "follow all of HP's regulations." As PK so astutely pointed out, SMU is in University Park. And considering the always-festive "binge drinking" occurs in the DRY town of UP, it's clear that SMU doesn't have to follow all of UP's regulations, either. Game day at SMU is an experience in and of itself, and a damn enjoyable one.

I will be at the Tulsa game. I really hope it is more like you describe, and less like the gatherings in the early 2000's. I have heard that attendance levels fell dramatically last year.

I think 6-7 wins could be possible with decent QB and LB play.

Just a thought. Could we secede from UP and join Dallas, since we own all the land between campus and Central Expressway?

The Green Elephant has officially reopened and consists of the Home Bar with a new sign. Literally not a single other change was made to the bar.
