SMU - A plan for the future

Post by Cheesesteak »

A plan for the future

As SMU looks toward its 100th anniversary, a blueprint for its continued advancement has taken shape with the publication of the Centennial Strategic Plan 2006-2015.

The plan includes five major goals:

• To enhance the academic quality and stature of the University.

• To improve teaching and learning.

• To strengthen scholarly research and creative achievement.

• To support and sustain student development and quality of life.

• To broaden global perspectives.

"This new strategic plan will guide our progress not just for the next five years, but through this Centennial Decade ending in 2015," states the plan's Introduction.

An implementation plan is a new feature of the strategic planning process. The intent is "to provide specific action items that support the lofty goals and objectives of the Centennial Strategic Plan," according to its introduction. Each goal - for example, "to improve teaching and learning" - features milestones for measurable progress.

Copies are available in the dean's office of each school, in the SMU libraries, and from Public Affairs.

Nothing about enhancing, improving, strengthening, supporting, broadening or sustaining athletics, though. :(

I suspect it would be covered this broad objective:

"To support and sustain student development and quality of life. "

I feel strongly that athletics/intramurals are essential to the development of future leaders/citizens. Stratch the surface of most leaders and they are competitive, disciplined and dedicated to preparation.

Non-revenue sports rule!
