Secret weapon?

Post by Dark Horse »

You're the defensivee coordinator at Texas Tech, and you're breaking down film of the Mustangs in preparation for the season opener. What do you know?

> You know DeMyron Martin is a freakin' man who's going to get his yards, and maybe points.
> You know Bobby Chase is a monster WR who's not the fastest guy in the world, but he's big and strong and runs good routes and catches everything near him.
> You know the offensive line isn't overwhelming, but it's a little bigger and presumably a little better than last year.
> You know that Ryan Kennedy is as big as a house and has the best hands on the team, and if he's healthy, he runs pretty well for a big guy.
> You know that Rey Pellerin is another big target who showed improved a ton between the beginning and the end of last year.
> You know that Blake Warren is tiny but elusive. You know Jay'Mond Cleveland was a productuve playmaker in his first two seasons, and that last year must have been some kind of a mirage caused by injury or something. You know Columbus Givens and Emmanuel Sanders are young, but they're fast and athletic, and if your defense falls asleep, they can turn short receptions into long plays.

But if you're the Tech defensive coordinator, what do you really know about Joe Ferguson? You know he transferred from Northwestern, and that he hasn't played in ages. He's supposed to be freaky-fast and have good hands. You don't know if he can run a route, or if so, which routes he runs well.

If I'm Tech's defensive coordinator, Ferguson worries me a little bit.

Nahhh...haven't you seen Tech's message board? Their 3rd stringers could beat our guys by 5 TDs.

I would rate his hands and speed, as average at best. From what I was told, add his summer work ethic to that catagory as well.

I heard last fall that he was pretty impressive in scrimmages.. contrary to what some are saying on here. Will he be some mega-huge impact player? no..

If anyone surprises.. I would say the new kid.. McCann would be interesting. Although I would prefer a redshirt on him.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

I guess I'm somewhere in between. I've always been told he has exceptional speed, but average hands. I've heard the same about his summer work habits, too.

As long as we can stretch the field more this year, I don't care if it's Ferguson, Givens, Sanders or Larry Edmondson sneaking on to the field and displaying his speed.

You forgot one key element in the Mustang offense: Justin Willis. He will either do a good job or he won't. If he doesn't, don't worry about the receivers at all. The QB won't get them the ball.

Justin Willis will get it done. He's a winner.

I think its also important to note how young our RBs are. When we spell DeMyron it will be with Fitzgerald or Mapps, not Cedric Dorsey or Massey - who they had seen.

Both Mapps and Fitz have surprising speed and could surprise a defense geared to handle DeMyron's power.

Just a thought.

I think Dorsey will see lots of playing time, too.

When I saw secret weapons, I was thinking of what would help SMU really win the game. Important things like:

An All U-Can Drink 18 Wheeler stocked with Frozen Margarita Machines and a Full Bar parked in front of the Leach Compound starting 5 days before the 1st game.

Maybe an SMU grad that would be the retiring DA for Lubbock willing to prosecute a few Tech players for minor infractions like possesion of a back pack full of pot, DUI's, or robbery.

Maybe if we could get Tech to feel shame for offering athlete only classe like Vegetables you Might Eat, PS2 Appreciation, and Fastfood Value Meals: Which Number is Right for You and retroactively deny credit to players who took those classes and thus making them ineligible.

Send a few SMU fan's to the opening day of Tech practice's and play whose driving a new Lexus and the posting the info on carsthatcollegeathletesdrivebutcannotaffordbecausetheyhaveno sourceofincome.com
